After considerable research, The conclusion on pH pens was a crapshoot at best. Milwaukee sucked least followed by Oakton with Hanna at the bottom of the barrel. I stuck with test drops. Accurate to 0.1 pH, no batteries, no cleaning, no maintenance. They kept my Marine tank going for years, an environment far more pH sensitive than weed.

wait wait wait... you use a drop test?

i use liquid drops and I can't get it more accuracte than 1 ph away. it's either orange. yellow. or green. ...

Yea, those gh kits are hard to read. I want to go litmus paper. I would think they are the easiest to read and accurate enough. Any suggestions?

i wish freezerboy could give some more detail.

i have 2 different drop kits. the wide range one says my res is about 5. the narrow range one says its about 6.4. now, in my opinion, they should read pretty damn close...haha im tossing the narrow band one out, because ive been having low-ph troubles in a f/d, and having to add large amounts of vinegar to get the stuff to go yellow (good ph is in the yellow range). ive lost faith in my drops. maybe they are just too old? ill be recieving my nutradip meter, along with another milwakee e/c this week.

Litmus paper works great with clear water but add some dark nutes and pH of 6 looks like a pH of 4 which isn't all that different than a pH reading of 10

Ph pens should be replaced regurarly. - First sign of pH instability - I replace the tester now days. I've mucked with batteries - replaced the probe - and a lil while later - I'm buying a new tester.

I don't use a tester a lot when the garden is running well, but it is a must have - and totally useless if not accurate.

i was told bluelab? was the best? if i were to spend over 100 bucks what new meters are the choices? i dont mind re buying but i have never bought 1 so i dont know if to buy a 50-70 for a regular one if not much diffrence to a 100 ish meter? or is their a differnce?

i rather buy 3 individual units such like ph ,tds/ ec .. over convenience if i get better reliable readings. i would also like a meter that always hooked up always accurately reading

Distilled or deionized water will not hurt your pH electrode as long as you dont store the bulb in the water.
All manufactures recommend rinsing the electrode in distilled water prior to and after use.

As far as pH meters go, you get what you pay for and quality is your best value.
My Oakton Ion 6 pH meter is 5 years old and the electode is 4 years old. I spent more on the double junction electrode than most do on their meter.
Proper storage and cleaning is key.

Repeat. Dont store your electrode in distilled or deionized water. Rinsing in DI water will do no harm.
