The swivel view finders are great when using a tripod. It allows ya to get that camera in a tight angle (or upside down), and still see what you are looking at. Or hold it above a crowd, shooting the distance.
There are some nice cameras out there. Sounds like you all have found some good models.
I stronly sugest the tripod when takinging pictures that are zoomed in. Avoid stabalizer gimics, they take away light and picture quality as a rule. As mentioned before, some tripods will let you mount your camera upside down, and under the tripod. This is really a plus at times. Buy a good used one (again, keh.com / gitzo )
