Diffuser? YES, of course...Before they came out, I diffused my own with a regular screen at the bottom, yes had some problems getting it to stay ALL the time, but well worth the smoothness of the hit and not just a HUGE glug of HOT smoke hitting you with little cooling through the bong..
the best ASH catcher I have used personally was from ILLADELPH...they make sick bongs too with reinforcements for the HUGE ash catchers they have...
