Thanks for the links Very Oldman. Bookmarked to check out this weekend when I've got more time. You might be old, but it's never too late to learn to Didge.

I bought one in Australia a few years back...never got the hang of circular breathing. I can make the right sounds, just not constant. I think I may try again.

Here she is...sorry it is sideways...heh

I started out with a inexpensive 3ft bamboo didge. Got some great sounds and was able to learn the basics. The ones I have now are not concert quality either, but they're pretty nice to me and I enjoy playing them immensely.

Blan-k-flor What size diameter of PVC are you using? Have you fastened a mouthpiece or are you playing the PVC straight. Great places to play for beginners are hallways and stairwells. They really enhance the sound and make it easier for you to hear yourself accurately.

TexasToker Nice looking didge. The next one that I want to get I'd like to have more of a natural finish like yours. I'm interested in getting a Jesse Lethbridge didge.

Moth Thanks for checking out the thread. I never would have been interested in Didgeridoo unless a friend hadn't turned me on to it. I'll keep doing what I do and maybe someday someone else will catch the bug from me.

Here's a Youtube link to a guy playing a crystal didgeridoo if anyone is interested.

My "didge" is only a piece of a 1" PVC pipe. Despite i´m a poor man, it´s dificult to purchase an authentic didge in my country (Argentina) an they are very expensive. I wish i could learn to play the basics with this improvised didge:dance013:.

Blan-k-flor, PVC is perfectly fine for practicing and learning the basics. I might suggest if possible for you to find a piece of PVC with a larger diameter. Perhaps 2-3 inch and then fit it with some beeswax to create a seal. You'll notice with the larger diameter PVC that you're sound will be deeper and louder. The longer your PVC is the deeper your sound will be also. The beeswax will create a seal between your mouth and the didge, and it'll just feel much nicer on your face after you learn to play for longer periods of time.

On a rare occasion...

On a rare occasion...

It's similar to meditation for some although I've never been able to achieve it through meditation. With the didgeridoo though it's a little easier. Probably due to increased oxygen levels in your body after playing for a long time. The feeling is like an enhanced sense of well-being or elation and you feel like your fully aware. Your senses are fully heightened. The feeling can last several minutes or longer.

I bought one in Australia almost a decade ago, but never committed any real amount of time to it. This has me kind of stoked on it now. . .

Any tips for someone just starting? I have a little book that came with my didje but I'm not all that impressed with it's explanation.

Practice...

Practice...

B. Self Reliant, start with your basic drone lip vibration and when you're able to make a steady even vibration try experimenting with different amounts of lip pressure. Once you are able to do that start practicing different vocalizations. Build the basic skills involved in playing and once you've mastered circular breathing you can tie it all together to a beat. Youtube has some pretty good videos demonstrating different aspects of playing the didgeridoo. The thing that I would suggest the most is to practice. Until you can circular breathe you should be practicing at least 30 minutes a day. At first those thirty minutes are going to seem boring and pathetic as you struggle to make sounds. It will seem like an eternity, but as you progress the time will slip by faster. Soon thirty minutes of play will seem like nothing.

Five Steps to Circular Breathing Happiness...

Five Steps to Circular Breathing Happiness...

I found this video on youtube that I thought might help some of you that are struggling with the Circular breathing aspect of playing the didgeridoo. There's tons of bad videos, and some helpful, trying to teach circular breathing. This one I like because you can really see what the player is doing and it breaks it down into simple steps that are easily practiced. Hope you enjoy it.

If anyone liked the last instructional video here are links to the rest in the series. I think this guy did a good job of demonstrating and documenting some of the aspects of playing a didgeridoo. Hopefully others will find this information useful. I wish this was available when I started playing.

Here are the different techniques he documents followed by the links:

This is exactly what I was looking for! Thanks! It's hard for me to learn something when I don't have an overall idea of what I'm trying to accomplish and that helped out big time.

I'm going to watch the other ones next. . .

:smoke out:

EDIT: After watching the video and playing around a little bit, I think one of the problems I'm having is the shape of my mouthpiece. If it needs to be reshaped, what's the best way to go about that? The wax is pretty hard, so do most folks heat it up with something?
