i grew up listening to jimi hendrix every night
mainly due to the fact that i shared a room with one of my older brothers (whom passed away in 1973
) & he played those LP's all day & all night
i'm 46 ... am i an old stoner? 1'st concert was "Yes" @ colt park, in hartford. ct ... it was amazing ....sometime in june 1976, followed shortly there after by the grateful dead @ the same venue, that would be 8/2/76 another fantastic show ...

I read recently that Jimi Hendrix played with Ike Turner for a while in the early days.....but had to sack him cos he wouldn't follow the set music ...ha!....

I saw Hendrix at a place in Philadelphia called The Electric Factory. The Soft Machine opened for him. I think this was 1967 or 1968 - exact dates are kind of fuzzy for me anymore.
The Factory had like a flea market right next to the dressing room. Clothes, buttons, face painting, beads - the usual hippie stuff.
The hippie clothing store I worked at (Ward's Folly) had a store in the Factory.
I wasn't working that night but I was in the store with my co-worker, Marco waiting for Hendrix to come on when who should walk in but Jimi. He talked to us for a few minutes. bought some Nehru shirts and stuff and then went back into the dressing room. My friend and I were pretty speechless the whole time (something to do with some blotters or something) but we managed to say something I am sure.
Anyway, it was one of the most fantastic shows I have ever seen. I used to think that Hendrix did all his stuff with overdubs prior to seeing him - well, he could play three things at once AND sing at the same time. Amazing!
I also saw the Who, The Allman Brothers, Elton John and way too many other bands to remember much less list at the Electric Factory.
Before the Factory opened there was a place named The Trauma and I saw a bunch of 60's bands there as well.

Also saw Jimi Hendrix at the Singer Bowl in Queens in 68, as someone else mentioned, along with Janis Joplin and the Rolling Stones, whom I've seen many times. Also saw the Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Santana many times, and most of the other big groups of the 60s and 70s. My biggest thrill was Bob Marley. I used to sell him herb back in the 70s (he lived in South Miami). I once was backstage with him at the Miami Jai Alai fronton. He was smoking his spliff, and asked me if I wanted to sing in the chorus. Of course I said yes, and got to sing with the chorus, which consisted of Rita Marley and other family members and friends. That was a thrill for me. One thing about Bob. He would not share his spliff when he was smoking. That was for him, and he smoked constantly! Sadly, he passed away two years after that concert.

yes, i saw Jimi, Janis & the Doors in one three week period in 1967 at Merriwether Post in Columbia MD. Hendrix played during a thunderstorm (outside pavilion) and it was INCREDIBLE ... I remember it like it was yesterday ...

Last year on the anniversary of Hendrix's birthday there was a blurb in the newspaper about how old he would have been (64 maybe?). Not sure why I mentioned it to my mom who was nearby, she is of an older generation, very reserved and conservative, into classical music, was a Reagan fan, etc... I was shocked when she explained that my dad's "crazy" cousin had taken them to a Hendrix show when they had travelled across the country to California for a visit. She clenched her fists and scrunched up her face and said "I couldn't believe how someone could channel such power and take that physically." Surprisingly, she was very complimentary of the performance. They had taken me on that trip when I was a few months old so I asked her about that and she casually mentioned that since they couldn't find a babysitter they took me to the show! I was totally floored... I've always been very affected by recordings of certain live Hendrix performances.
Then she told me that a week after the Hendrix show they took me to a Glen Campbell show in a restaurant with just a few other people in the audience. I had always thought my first concert was a Neil Sedaka/Carpenters show when I was about 7 years old. Hah!

Always lamented never seeing Jimi,not quite old enough.Three stand out shows I REMEMBER at a party Richie Havens just got up sat on a stool and played for a couple hours,Canned Heat w/ Harvey Mandel(Bear was still alive) in a small theater and John Lee Hooker in a small club.The greatest sound mix live from any bands I saw would have been Pink Floyd and Yes.Saw them many times and it was always enjoyable as they where very tight bands and the sound was great.Later on I saw Stevie Ray Vaughan at a club show in the early eighties and he played a whole set of Hendrix.He took Jimi to a new level.I was amazed with SRV's abilities.Sly and the Family Stone didnt disapoint and I heard he was a notorious no shower so I was glad to have seen them.Muddy Waters was great too.Wish I could remember most of the shows.
