sadly, spending the $$ is the only way to guarantee quality. You can pick up one on pennysaver mode and it might last, might not. Westinghouse is a good brand that hasn't been mentioned here. LG and GE are usually the most popular, followed by fridgaire. If I really had the money, I'd put down 2k euros and some 'change' and get the opticlimate 3500 pro 2. handles alllll the climatic control work. From temp to humidity to everything.

great topic! Is there such thing as a new and efficient dehumidifier that DOES NOT generate a ton of heat? My cellar feels like a damn sauna sometimes!

The larger the unit the longer that it will last. Smaller capacity units tend to wear out faster.

Not necessarily. The capacity of the unit, like with AC's, should be matched with the size of the space to be dehumidified, along with other factors such as moisture sources, if an AC is in use, etc.

Too large a unit can cause short cycling which will shorten the life of the unit.

All dehumidifiers are not created equal. Go here for reliable info. http://www.allergybuyersclub.com/dehumidifiers-on-sale.html [I have no connection with ABC]. Good luck. -granger
