What if humans evolved to not need or want sympathy. People would still have problems and issues, but they would ask for help and advice. What if the concept of sympathy went extinct? No more, I have it worst than you competitions.
Of the three I believe the third one is new to TV and so they showed it first so that all the folks who already saw one and two on TV wouldn't have to sit thru the first two or wait until the first two were over to see the third one. The money angle is ratings, the more people watching the higher the rating, the higher the rating the more money you can make off of advertising. Really when you stop to think about it, every second you watch TV you're being sold something the shows are selling you a particular view of life. Consider this, back in the day when censorship was much tighter violent crimes like murder and rape were something that happened far less frequently then today. Still people were interested in getting a glimpse of what it's like and so eventually it found it's way in to TV programming. One of the first shows to openly bring rape out of the shadows was "All In the Family starring Archie Bunker (Carol O'Conner). The victim was Archie's wife Edith (Jean Stapleton). They didn't show the rape or anything even close, they just showed a visibly shaken Edith return home and reveal she was raped. This became a big deal as it was such shocking program compared to what the public was used to being spoon fed. Ratings for the network went way up and they were able to attract much more lucrative advertising dollars. Ever since then programing on TV has steadily pushed the envelope and now when a rape is depicted they practically show it in graphic detail. Even the news has picked up on the public's fascination with the darker aspects of lives to the point now where violence is a regular thing because TV programing and movies are filled with it and it teaches people to think this is how life is. Imagine how different things might be if we took all violence out of programing and replaced it with good, positive, inspirational programing and we forced news agencies to have to report a greater amount of positive news items then negative news items. After a generation or two of that I bet the world would be a better place.
Nah people would still compete because competing isn't about sympathy it's about ego, even when they're competing about who is suffering most and therefore deserves more sympathy. Us humans are freaking weird sometimes.

So true. I have noticed in recent years, in the west at least. There seems to be an ongoing contest about who has it the worst.
Speaking of compass points how can there be an east or west on a globe? Depending on where you are at, anywhere can be east or west same with north and south. It's all a matter of perspective. Although with north or south, once you reach one of the poles everything becomes north or south of you depending on which pole you reach.
Why is there a North and South pole, but no East and West pole?!?

Congrats and hang in there. A few more days and you should be free of physical addiction. Unfortunately the hard part is all the associations one makes with cigarette's, like smoking after a meal, after sex, while driving, while on the phone etc. Many people trying to quit find themselves almost mindlessly reaching for a smoke when they do those things, it's what is meant by psychological addiction. Good work arounds often involve giving your hands something else to keep them busy. One thing to avoid at all costs is if you find yourself trying to tell yourself "I'll buy just this one pack, smoke one or two cigs and give the rest away." This virtually never works.
