No one knows at this point as to why he hung himself. He left behind a wife and several animals as he was a supporter of animal rights. He often took his favorite cat with him on location when filming.. Here is the last photograph of the actor and his fav cat.

I just fired up some season 2 with Slim Pickens. Grasshopper saw another lad steal some fruit from a tree. He's now at odds with himself. Caine saw the marshal shoot Slim without warning & ratted to the judge. Slims younger bros are itchin to get to the now fired marshal.
Caine now defends the x lawmen & the little bro dies accidentally in a rumble against Caine & the X. Caine kicks ass but the bro fell trying to retrieve a gun. Now they're in the system & the trial begins.

Sex experts say that Carradine's advanced age suggests that he may have been a lifelong practitioner of the secretive and dangerous practice, one that can go fatally awry.
Los Angeles Superior Court documents of Carradine's divorce put online by The Smoking Gun show that his most recent ex-wife, Marina Anderson, accused the actor of "deviant sexual behavior which was potentially deadly." The alleged behavior wasn't described in the court documents.

I wouldn't say that's very potentially deadly considering the average human lifespan is less then that, and that's with no auto-erotic asphixiation involved!
Oh and I remember a tv segment on him where he admitted to dropping acid over 100 times.
