Cutting a hole in the floorboard of my house

I need to cut a hole in the floor to vent... It needs to be 4 inches (round).

How should I go about doing this witout completely screwing up my floor?

start with a 3" hole cutter for your drill bit, then use a sawzaw to widen the hole to the 4". If you don't have access to a sawzaw you can use a good hacksaw, depends on what the floor is made of and how thick it is. If you do get a bit out of round, you can use a flange to seal up the open areas. Then run your ducting from the flange.

Or break out the shotty and shoot a hole in the floor........J/K (don't get that carried away......yet)

they do make 4" hole saws. about $10 at home depot.

if you're planning to use pvc for your duct, don't forget to allow for the thickness of the pipe, as pvc is measured by the inside diameter.

Thanks for the replies!

Will I need a special drill? Mine is somewhat weak...

I'll be using the regular drier hose ducting.

The larger hole bit you use the harder it will be on the drill, you can start with smaller bits and work up to the larger hole if you want to take it easy, or have a low power drill.

sorry Haps, but that don't work w/ a hole saw, as they have a guide bit that keeps the thing going straight. if ya hole saw too small, then ya gotta get the sawzall out.

Ya gotta keep the center yerself with subsequent holes, drill hole saw will still work.

you can drill loads of smaller holes around the circumference and join them up with a jigsaw...

Hole saws are some of the best inventions ever made for growers...I keep a 4", 6", & 8" just for making vent holes. If possible, check from the underside to make sure that you're not going to drill into a beam/stud. If you can't get to the underside, drill a small hole (<1/4") where you want the center of the hole and use a bent coat hanger to feel around under the floor and make sure that nothing will be in the way.
