Creating a seedline from my favourite sative - ZamalHaze

Hi folks

Maybe you remember the gorgeous Zamal x Neville's Haze lady I grew a couple of years ago, I chose a very Zamal dom pheno as my keeper due to it's exceptional, unique high, my favourite smoke of all-time and one my friends are always asking if I have more of. I kept her around and she has pride of place in my mother cabinet, she yields quite well, takes 16 weeks to flower and loves to branch all over the place. The finished buds are lime green and frosty, first time I grew her she was fruity and tasted like mangoes mixed with lemons, limes and oranges, the fruitiness was strong and became a little more musky after a cure. Second time I grew her, I fed her less and got a slightly smaller yield, but this time she tasted like carrots, same amazing high but different flavour, just as tasty as the first run, but I feel I got closer to the authentic taste of the Zamal which is described as mango/carrot.

The strong side branching of the Zamal pheno was apparent from early on:

The plant stretched 3-4x in flower and produced lots of little buds all over the place:

For comparison's sake, here is the Neville's Haze pheno, which formed long continuous colas:

Very frosty for a sativa:

The Neville's pheno had very different buds that were less frosty and didn't have the same foxtail structure:

The last of the buds from the second run, I consider this to be the best sativa I've ever smoked:

This Zamal pheno has the key traits of the Zamal - unique, complex high, mango/carrot taste, and also other Zamal traits such as exceptional side branching and forming lots of little buds, so I'm happy that she is pretty close to the pure article with the added advantage of already having been cleaned of hermie traits and adapted to indoor growing conditions, I think Female Seeds did great work here.

Now, being that this is my favourite smoke of all-time and with such a complex taste/high that I would never get bored of it, I really wanted to preserve the genes in seedform. Recently, I've been lucky enough to obtain some pure Zamal seeds, and Gerrit from Magus Genetics kindly gave me a pack of Zamal x Warlock, but last year I only had the ZamalHaze mother. I also had an exceptional male Blueberry (f2 of DJ short original BB from 1998) that was sativa-leaning and has the strongest smell of any male I have ever encountered, he absolutely reeked but had a very fine odour. I used him to pollinate a lower branch or two during the second ZamalHaze flowering run and collected about 100 seeds.

2 months ago I decided it was high time to germ some of those beans, and put 10 into paper towels. I got 8 plants (9 germed, I killed one in a silly accident) and 4 of these were early males and were eliminated as they were Blueberry leaning. I placed the remaing 4 into flower 2 weeks ago, and two more males were then identified, of these, one was very stretchy and showed sex several days earlier, he was eliminated:

The other male looks to have several Zamal traits - strong side branching, very thin leaves, takes forever to show sex, looks like a good choice to backcross to the ZamalHaze mother or to make F2s:

And here is the Blueberry pheno, she looks a lot like her Blueberry father; the leaves are very similar, it's nice to have two different phenos, shame 6 out of 8 were male. Perhaps temps were a tad high in the seedling box and this influenced things? However, I have had good female to male ratios overall.

Sadly, the deadly hermies have struck, the mae has sprouted pistils and is a full blown hermie now, and one of the females has also sprouted some balls, so I'm down to two ladies, the two pictured, methinks the feminised ZamalHaze isn't a good starting point for my Zamal genes, seems to be carrying a hermie trait. Time to start some pure Zamal seeds I think.

I like the really small fanleaves on that Zamal/Haze. Which side is that dominant in? The Haze or Zamal? Tiny ass fanleaves are a trait I prize, haha

Hiya Ganico, the one with the small leaves is the Blueberry leaning pheno, the other one with thinner leavs but really long blades is the Zamal leaning pheno. The other pheno female is possibly a Haze pheno, it has the thiunnest leaves and is the stretchiest with the thinenst stems, doesn't look like the Zamal pheno at all, sadly it is a hermie and got the chop today.

Hiya Lou, thanks for popping in, I'm down to two plants now - the two ladies shown in the last pics, the other lady below has shown a few balls, and the male has stopped prodcing balls and started to produce clumps of pistils, so he/she is getting the chop too. I started 10 more of these Blueberry x ZamalHaze seeds and am gonna put them straight into 12/12 in 1.5 litre pots of Canna coco and look for a Zamal leaning male that doesn't have a hermie trait.

I'm concerned that it is the ZamalHaze mother that is responsible for passing on the hermie trait, she has never shown any balls, but being feminised, I reckon it's more likely to have come from her than the Blueberry father.

Hey BH. Congrats on the great strains. Just some anthropological info on the Zamal (I'm not a Zamal-grower myself, but I hear these stories all the time from my Réunionais friends).
The Zamal (a designation derived from the Malgash word "Zamala") is actually not concidered as a particular strain on the island. It is just the word used for Cannabis. There are several different varieties present on the island (and even if the mainstream production is Sativa, the part of the population that is of of Hindu descent brought Indica with them from the mainland). So, even if you grow seeds from la Réunion, you're not growing "Zamal", but a variety of Zamal.

The "Mangue-Carotte" could possibly be the designation of a much appreciated local variety, but most likely it refers to the way it was cultivated.
The "Gramouns", or the ancients (who used the Zamal to brew potions against asthma, anxiety and abdominal pains) classified the Zamal (quality) not after genetic properties, but where and how it was cultivated.

Therefore, the Mangue-Carotte is a type of fruity Sativa grown under Mango trees, which gives them a particular Mango scent. It is concidered the best quality weed - the lambsbread of la Réunion - and fetches the highest price.

The Lemon Zamal grows under Lemon trees, and is also concidered high quality, but ranked below the Mangue-Carotte.

The "la terre" is an earthy, musky produce of good quality, a soft smoke.

The "poivre de la gratel" is a spicy, peppery variety, a rough smoke of lower quality.

Equally, the "secopat" gets its name from the technique used for drying the produce.

Just a few POW:s on the Zamal.

Thankyou very much for the valuable info Rosy, I wish zamalito was still around to chime in as well, then we could really get a good discussion going. Any more info you can glean from your firends, please share, it is very much appreciated.

I'm well aware 'Zamal' doesn't describe a particular strain, and that cannabis on La Reunion is a mish-mash of genes from around the Indian Ocean's coasts - African slaves and immigrants brought African genes, Indian immigrants brought indian genes - both southern sativas from places liek Kerala and indicas from the northern parts, then there are Thai, Burmese, hell, all kinds of SE Asian genes in the Zamal mix too, zamalito talked about some zamal phenos that were clearly very old Thai genes and others that were South Indian sativa types, he also mentioned shorter, faster, less branchy plants. I suppose the genepool on La Reunion has much in common with Hawaii in that it's all introduced genes but due to the adaptation and acclimatisation in a superb environment, the quality is very high. The difference being that the genes in the La Reunion pool are probably somewhat older and contain less commercial genes.

I reckon any journey through the Zamal genepool is bound to throw up some killer plants, and I intend to fully enjoy my journey.

Here's the male ZamalHaze that suddenly decided to start making buds instead of balls. Real shame as it's a lovely plant with some obvious Zamal traits, if it had been a pure male, I reckon it would have been a good choice to cross to my Zamal pheno lady. Ah well, the search for suitable breeding plants goes on...

Good job on the Zamals, glad to hear good things about these genes as I`ve got a pack of FMS Zamal x Skunk for next season on order as we speak.
Looking forward to it! Unfortunately as they`re femmed prob. won`t get a male for crossing. I`ll cross it with one of my other strains though, which`ll prob bring down the flowering time but also be one more step away from the "real deal".

Gorgeous job Hempire, Herbalistic admires you  for BH :D

I hope you didnt start too many beans of those 100 (you know what im after, sorry for being slow to arrange things..)

Rosy Cheeks: Very intresting info, like BH asked before, please try to talk more with your friends about various cannabis strains growed in La Reunion / passed throught La Reunion to gain communitys wisdom even a little, ok?

Like I mentioned ^^^ about the different varieties passing throught La Reunion, it wouldnt be ludacriss thought that the weed smoked/collected seeds in La Reunion wouldnt be growed in island, but is just passing throught and the suppliers take nice cut of different varieties to sell for locals & turist. This and the fact that La Reunion has interesting geographical location considering different varieties & even more interesting history considering different ethnic groups & emigrants would support the claim that local "La Reunion landrace/landrace´s" are "just" hybrids with different varieties in the mix.

I dont know the exact/whole story of the Australian MullumbimbyMadness(or something similar), but it seems they have alot same with Zamal´s with mixed reports of the origin/heritage & potency A.K.A there are many MM´s as there are many Zamal´s, right?

I dont care is it authentic La Reunion landrace from authentic La Reunion marijuana genetics, or is it/them a hybrid between authentic La Reunion genetics & other varieties as long it´s as unique as people have described....

Yeah, ^^^^ that was just Herbalistic :2cents:
