Ironkey offers a nice USB that allows only 10 password entry attempts before it wipes the USB clean. This stops brute force cryptographic attacks and even if you have a supercomputer attempting to guess the password:

"Unlike software-based encryption, the Cryptochip™ prevents encryption keys from being transferred and stored on PCs, where they are vulnerable. If a thief tries to break into an IronKey and enters 10 incorrect passwords, the Cryptochip will securely erase all of the encrypted data with patent-pending Flash Trash technology, ensuring no trace of your data can be recovered from the device."

I like the onboard Firefox browser for use when I travel and need to use a friend's computer or free WiFi somewhere:

"Imation Personal drives come pre-configured with a portable version of Mozilla's popular Firefox Web browser for Windows computers. All data, cookies, and Web history are maintained locally on the drive. The optional Imation Secure Sessions service protects your privacy on the Web by triple-encrypting all of your Web surfing traffic, and provides secure cloud DNS services to help assure that you are not visiting a spoofed website."

Last but not least, it uses 256 encryption. You can even keep a 1 Gb Truecrypt file inside of your ironkey and make that file double encrypted for extra safety:

"HARDWARE ENCRYPTION

Data: AES Cipher-Block Chaining mode
Encryption Keys: 256-bit Hardware DRNG
PKI: 2048-bit RSA
Hashing: 256-bit SHA
FIPS Validations: 140-2 Level 3"

I thought I had lost my 2 Gb Ironkey and it sat in 100 degree sun for two weeks, enduring several good drenching monsoon thunderstorms as well. I looked everywhere for it damn it. I had given up looking and relaxed into letting the Universe present it to me again, a technique I've done many times successfully. My wife (thank you thank you) found it where I had fumbled it out of my pocket when I climbed out of our truck way out in the wilderness on a 4x4 trail. No one else had come along and found it in the meantime....amazing. It worked perfectly of course and I attached it to a lanyard so it won't just fall out of my pocket no matter what I am doing.

understand it's contempt of court here in Oz if you won't open yr truecrypt file for the police.

so store yr pics on an outside drive. use fileshredder to clean deleted files.
TC is designed to get around all of this. If you use TC "properly," you can unlock the "empty" volume. Government may "suspect" you have another volume hidden inside, but cannot prove it.

One good reason to encrypt files would be if others -- kids, kids' friends, visitors, etc. -- have access to your computer. Wouldn't want the wrong people to accidentally stumble upon picts of your grows.

And if you use Mac OS, encryption is built in. No need for third party software.
