Container depth

Looking to start my first outdoor grow soon. The soil around here is essentially just rocks, then some hard clay, then the water table, so digging is out of the question. I was thinking about taking some 2x4s and just making a 3' x 3' x 3.5" deep box then lining the bottom with weed cloth. Should work out to about 20 gallons. Is this way too shallow? I'm concerned about tall containers being noticed. I would be very happy with 1/2 pound per plant.

Thanks.

I would go at least 6" to 10" depth minimum, not positive you'll reach your 1/2 goal with just 3.5" depth, but just my .02
