College Living: On or Off Campus; input?

I am trying to make a choice about my living arrangements for next year.
Going away to college as a transfer student (junior) I am not sure as to whether I want to live off campus or on campus. I am looking for first hand experience here.

I am not too big on roommates, and if I lived off campus it would be a one bedroom. I am currently on my own (about to move home due to a breakup) and have about 75% of the items I need to live on my own. So its not as if I would have a tough time rounding up items. But I also know that there is more responsibility (or stress, or time away from studies) involved in living on ones own. Is living on campus any more desirable. I know its a personal opinion, but what is everyones opinion that has done made similar choices in their life. I have only gone to a community college, and I know a larger university is a much different experience.

I'd imagine smoking is done easier off campus :joint:

I'm in a trade school and live off campus. I think that because we're young it's good to have a mix of the party hard attitude you find on campus and the quiet live life day by day life off campus. So my vote is to live off campus. You get a better dose of the "real world" that way.

yeah, but I've been doing the real world for the past two years, working full time and attending classes full time at a small community college, in a way I want a break from the real world more before I jump into it. But I do like my privacy.... Decisions, decisions....

You don't wanna live with a stranger, and you can't blaze in a dorm room...

You've already entered the real world my friend, going to a Dorm won't change that for the better

You sound like your where I am lol. Dorms suck for smoking as has been sstated, but living off campus sucks because if you have early classes.. Even a mile to walk to class is a lot for me! I love a good hike like anyone else but not at 7 am or 10pm through huge graveyards after lab!! lol.

full time work full time school, I feel your pain. I'm doing the same thing, thank god for christmas break tho eh? If you want to move in go ahead and do so, but for me living off campus means having time to collect my thoughts and not make stupid ass decisions like most of peers tend to do. For example, I can party with all the campus people in their dorms, but when shit starts to get out of hand I can just leave and go home to a quiet house. Plus, all the smart chicks dig the fact that I have a "normal life" outside of school. Can you say nerdy girls by day and porn stars at night? :woohoo:

*edit* speaking of growing weed though, i've got a roommate off campus and he is a fucking douchebag. do not sign a long term lease with a roommate!!

Hey bud you said you did not like roomates. So with my experiences with living on campus I would say that you are more than likely going to get a roomate and that SUCKS! Plus it wouldnt be conducive to growing if you plan on doing that not that it cant be done but just wouldnt be the smartest thing. So my vote for you would to be live off campus but not too far away.

Yea I've had real bad luck with roomies, I'd say go solo off campus for now, if you meet somone chill who needs a roomate go for it, thats what I am planing on doing after I get back into the college system (need one more semester at comunity college though).]

Edit: Whats the situation with parking? If you can park at school then you can live anywhere! Which would be sweet for rents sake and finding a place. If you cant drive then bike my friend, I always did.

Not sure yet, still applying to schools, and making decisions about the 07-08 year. I am hoping to bike to school, as I <3 my bike. But its not number one on the list.

What do you think my main motivation for living off campus is :p

Yeah, up until about two weeks ago I thought I was making this move with my ex girlfriend, its easier to split up house work, and responsibility with a lover as opposed to a roommate.

Well I really think off campus seems to be the way to go for me, but this thread is still young, so I'll take all opinions on the matter.

At 21 years old I took my community college credits and transferred to a University. Lived in the dorms. Had I gone off campus, I would have met virtually no one.

I think the first year you should always live on campus. It's an instant network of people almost. Yeah living in a small dorm with someone else sucks, but you're going to be bored living alone, and it might take you longer to get assimilated into the university.

I'd definately live on campus if they had designated dorms for older students...that way you dont have to deal with a bunch of immature 18 year olds.

How are you going to know where the parties are at if you dont live in a dorm? You're going to make friends in classes but still. Knowing more people = more options.

Going to college is going to take him out of the real world anyways. And if I had to live in the not-real-world, I'd rather do it in the dorms my first year.

Go off campus next year.

I was just thinking back to my first year of college, in the 70's. I got to live in the trial of the first co-ed dorm on campus. Isn't that a hoot? But anyway, the halls and just about everyone's room reeked of weed, times sure were different back then.

I'd go with off campus these days though from some of the stories I hear now.

Definitely live in the dorms for a year. Are you ever going to have that opportunity again in your life? You can live on your own forever...

I lived on campus last year as a freshman in a college 3 hours away from my home town. Its cool, but if you like to be alone its tough. I could never get away with burning in the dorms so it was either having to go to a friends house or taking a walk. I had an odd roommate, but then ended up meeting a really good smoking buddy. One of my best friends was a transfer student who lived off campus. If you're the type of person who isnt into partying all the time and just wants to chill id say go off campus. This year i transfered back home and live off campus. It was tough meeting people at first, but now at the end of my first semester there ive got a couple good friends. I like it a lot better, but i do spend a lot of time by myself. I get my work done when i want and have burn sessions whenever. I go to a small college so theres no real parties on campus so im not missing much. Having your own place defintely makes meeting girls a lot easier though, and plus your friends at school have a place they can chill out when they want to get away from school. If your school has strict alcohol and drug policies its a lot less stress on yourself living on campus. I know i use to worry about rolling up a joint of chronic nug in my dorm cause i knew people could smell it just from breaking it up. Defintely find out how the school is towards alcohol and pot before you make your decision.

I'm with angst on this one, for reasons stated before on living off campus, but if you look and find a dorm that sounds like just what you want, go for it. Specalized dorms are awsome, I lived my freashman year in with people all taking my classes and in the same department I was in mostly. Get a lot of homework done real fast with other people around havning the answers only a few doors down :joint:.

Well in my 3 years at university i lived 2 years on campus and one year, in the middle, off.

I can tell both methods are fun. But i think i liked living on campus more, everything is right around the corner: shops, dorm, internet, library, student union, liquer store, classes, clubs, bars, friends and HOT HOT HOT FIRST YEARS CHICKS!!!

If its your first year defo live on campus
