Dans I totally agree. I dont know why my buddy does it. But he does. lol... I know he uses tea so that would makes sense he is basically knocking down his concentrations with the tea. But I still dont think he flushes with it. Meaning he doesn't have any run off even with the tea. Either way not optimal.

In my post When I said I thought about trying this. I meant using saucers as a little rez sort of like hempy's so I can continue to use the Air Pot I spent money on. But I would still water till run off. Not let old food/water sit and soak backup. It honestly would not be good I know better... Now that I read my post that was not good advice and not what I wanted him to do or think. Thank you for clearing that up.

Anyone use gh micro bloom in coco hempy. What ratio. I use Canna coco a&b but one plant give me problems and I have micro bloom want to make swich in flower. So 6/9 or 8/16 or something different. Im hand watering once per day in 2 gal and plant is really big at this point.

I try running with a tight saucer under my smart pots and find if I water with no run off just till the saucer fills within 4 or 5 days Im 2.0 or better ec that is starting with 1.2ec There are a few who say they run with no runoff but I have tryed even low ec and it will start building if your not on top of it. I think I might give the saucer rez a try as long as there drinking and not sitting in it too long getting rot root. Put the perlite in the smart pot to just above water level and give it a try. I suspend some of my smart pots on a block of foam and found some roots will come down into the water. Going to try a couple hempy too 2 gal.

Cool to see how it goes for ya. UncleCrash... Ive moved into 5 gallon Hempys. Im going to play around with RW and Perlite and might try to drill a bunch of holes around the bucket like an air pot and see how that goes. Im always tinkering. Trying to get the most out of my runs.

This sounds like what I was looking for, a way to do it in coco without pumps with less maintenance than hand watering every day. Thanks! Trying it now.

Without sacrificing a bucket, I cut a gallon milk jug in half and put the bottom in a 3 gallon bucket I already had with holes in the bottom. I filled to the top of that with perlite, then coco.

Gonna join the ride here for a bit, read through the beginning of the thread.

I've been trying to do two feeds per day hand fed because people say that's the best way, introduce fresh nutes each time. I am not really noticing a huge difference in yield so I'm thinking of going back to the original Hempy way and feed every few days.

What do you guys think?

i found that even in 5 gallon coco hempys that by mid flower i had to feed every day to replenish the rez in the bucket .,

Okay thanks Dan, appreciate it. I just transplanted a Sour Hazy Jones into a 5g coco Hempy a couple days ago.

Have anyone tried to put many plants in one big pot. I mean putting 6 plants in one big 90L (23gal)bucket vs putting every plant in one smaller pot 10L (2,6gal). Is there going to be competition for root space?

COCO Hempy Style 2018

COCO Hempy Style 2018

After reading this thread i was sort of wondering what exactly happened to Dalihempy ? I personally feel that this thread should continue and perhaps brought back to life. I use the hempy buckets with botanicare coco currently . I like the perlite up to the drain hole then 100 % coco. I have been using milk jugs ( like the love handle) i also made one out of a recycled plastic coffee can. The coffee can one i put all perlite in bottom then 75 perlite 25 % coco layer followed by 50/50 layer with pure coco on top. That plant in Hempy coffee can took off like grease lightning. I also have a bag of botanicare coco that has premixed amount of perlite in it i think its 70 %coco and 30 % tiny pieces of perlite That i have not tried. I have found that a lot of hydro stores dont promote or even know what a hempy bucket is . Maybe because with hempy buckets you dont go thru as much nutrients as other systems .I have been using Earth Boxes my wife purchased for me over 20 years ago outdoors and they work great. Earth boxes and hempy are very simalar to hempy but they are more of a bottom feeder as the design has a water tube that u irrigate through . But my love of Earth boxes drew me to hempy style i also read the bottom feeder thread and found it very interesting. I totally get what the the hempy was originally designed for. The systems ability to just water every other day and flexibility in watering or not having to worry about over watering. No pumps and no mechanical gadgets. Just give a holler if u like the coco hempy but please no debates ,anger or insults to other gentlemen and ladies please show kindness to one another this world needs much more of it . :peacock:

Did this a few years ago.
One gallon plastic coffee can Hempys, perlite on the bottom and coco on top. Was looking to be a great grow until the Fungal gnats got me at about week 4 in flower. Still finished but light crop and quality was not like the parents of these clones.

I've got some recent ventures with coco and its a nice change up and transition to hydro, coming from solely soiless water /aact grows. Currently running several type of hempys out of curiosity. Started w/ 1 gal smart pot soiless rootball to 2.5 gal bucket. 4:1 perlite:vermiculite. A 5l traditional 4:1 again and now 2l coco. River rock at bottom for stability. They all work. Enjoy the ride.

Great i was going to try a sog maybe. One step at a time for me tho i think being a beginner like me its good thing to start with one plant to maturity. Seems like Gnats are always there in some form around coco tho. I kind of wonder if the coco was left to dry a little 1/2 inch or so on top would help

Coco Hempy user right here :). I've also used earth boxes outside. Pretty awesome styles of growing IMO. I get the same perplexed looks from the guys at the hydro store too. It's pretty funny.

4 Royal Highness in 3gal coco hempy's at week 4. Currently running these. Feel free to stop by the journal if you like.

Leaving hempy coco bucket dry on top with mature roots

Leaving hempy coco bucket dry on top with mature roots

Yup i grew in same janitor 3 gallon bucket . I use the same metal shelve system too but much smaller. :tiphat: I dont want to start a big argument about hempy bucket watering like was done earlier on this thread . So if the plant is well established and the roots are more mature Do you let your hempy run a little dry on top before you water again ? I guess after reading up on the auto pot system i am sort of curious how it appears to dry up on top before valve opens to let more water in to bottom feed the plant.

I don't recommend letting coco dry out ever. It may lead to EC spikes and pH fluctuations which often causes people to chase phantom nutrient deficiencies by adding calmag and and/or a plethora of other additives.

The idea of letting coco dry out comes from soil practices. Soil typically does not hold a ton of oxygen in comparison to coco when fully saturated so soil growers play a wet/dry cycle to get more oxygen to the roots. Coco users don't have to worry about that as coco holds plenty of oxygen at full saturation.

Now as far as autopots go it's slightly different. This is because the nutrient feed is coming from the bottom instead of the top. As a result of the system the coco never really drys out and if there is a small top layer of dry coco it acts as more of a mulch than part of the root zone medium. Bottom feed is a pretty cool concept and if done right seems to be very conservative on nutrients. The only downfall of bottom feed is the higher potential for nutrient build up if one doesn't have that part of the grow dialed in, but otherwise they are awesome.
