CLOSET GROWERS QUESTION!

I've found a great deal on these MH 400 watters. Come complete, straight from a warehouse, they switched over their lighting, and they're selling them cheap, 50$ a peace, in working condition.

I'm setting up a couple buddies with some basic 'complete' soil growing systems, and one of them wants to do a closet set up. Question for the closet growers out there:

Depending on the size of your closet, etc. What's your current set up in your closet? Do you leave the door open a bit? How do you get air circulation? How hot would a 400W MH get with an ambient room temp?

Thanks,

UG!

I have been growing in my closet for my current grow. The space is 2' x 4'. There's no door on the closet, though. It is a closet in my bed room. I'd suggest a small filter + fan, like an air purifier. I JUST bought one, and I've been growing for over a month. It helps with smell and air circulation. Depending on the size of the closet you are using, you might want something a bit different.

I have been using compact fluorescents, not MH or HPS. You should definitely read up on how to best control the heat and humidity in the space if you are going to be keeping the closet door shut.

Tomorrow I am relocating my plants into a closet that is bigger, but will have no one inside most of the time and the door will be shut so I also am trying to find a way to at least provide enough CO2. Like I said before, I have a small air purifier; and I am hoping that might be enough. But we'll see.

hiya microgram,

closet huh ? you should be able to close the door for 12 hours and make sure theres little to no light leaks when you enter the transition state,

400 MH will throw some heat but not crazy like 600 or 1k, you should be able to cools your closet if you up your exhaust system, let us know the size of that closet you're planning to use and we can throw you some info on what kind of fan/filer ect.. you should use.

btw 50 bucks for a complete 400watters is a damn good deal, make sure you get new bulb

cheers m8

Ventilation and exhaust could be a problem, could not too. You won't know till you try. I'd suggest a dry run; put a light and a thermometer in there before you start growing and see what temps you have.

i say you set everything up beside the plants and run it for a day or 2 to see hows the temp and air cir keeping it up or down

In the vernacular of the day, it's "ghetto" as hell and there are better ways, but it works for me. It's roughly 2'x4' (51-3/4" x 22-3/4").

This one shows the addition of a DIY vent (about an extra 30" of flow area).

I had a Stanley Blower fan mod before this fan and the variac. I had to keep it on the high setting but I stayed about 10*F above ambient for 500w's CMH.

(Because of the vent stack that dumps into the basement, I have about 7 sq/ft for a canopy. But, exhausting to the attic would solve that.)

Light proofing really wasn't a big deal, but I did have to reapply the silicon caulk a couple of times.

Not the best place for the ballasts, but its what I had to work with.

(I scavenged the hanging brackets from a couple of specular reflectors and made a UV/EOD combo.

lol...Like I said, it's slapped together, but it grows enough for me.

btw...None of this is any of my doing. Yeah, I did the labor, but the ideas came from here!

Thanks guys, appreciate the feed back. The smell will be a non issue, I'll DIY a carbon filter using an old coffee can and a large pencil jar or something. That rigged up to a few PC fans. It's no centrifuge, but for the two plants that will be in the closet, im sure it'll be fine.

I'll definitely have to add a max-min therm onto his list of stuff to pick up, I would have waited till I put the plants in, very glad you posted that. (Luck is usually on my side.. doh, I NEED SOME WOOD!)

Looks like a good setup, im glad you posted picks, props man; really helps.

I'm certainly going to pick up some extra bulbs, it's a must :p. (and wire up some temporary photocell + cfls in case the bulb burns out)
It's an old pulse start ballast and presumably a bulb that's about a year old. Guy has a whack of them, thank god for this new energy saving crisis.

Cheers guys, thanks a ton :).

Most use panda film, and seems probably the best and easiest way to go.

Still, I would get a new MH lamp. They are notorious for a short effective life, and there is no way to know just how long it has already burned.

It is certainly your choice, but I would urge you to give odor control a bit higher priority.

Namaste.

Thanks dude, the grow is a 'budget grow', and if it was certainly my own I most certainly would. I think we might have a few filters going at the same time, and cooling the bulb consistantly. His grow is in a small 'walk in' closet, that's not very big, it's about 5 feet deep, 5.5-6.5 feet tall, and about 3 feet wide. s/he has no job currently, thus not very much income :joint:.

In due time we shall see :).

UG!

Thanks again everyone!
