Cloning with Old School

Hey guys I was going through the albums on my old profile from years ago and found a series of photos that demonstrate how I clone. I had amazing success with clones so I thought I'd share my methods:

You will need - Either a cloner, Rockwool cubes, Root Riots or another growing medium will do. I suggest doing a DIY bubble cloner. Cheap and they have great root times. You will also need a clean, sharp razor blade. I take the initial cutting with a pair of Hydrofarm trimmers (which I recommend) but you can also just do it with the razor blade if you'd like. I also like to use a rooting gel such as Rootech.

First off, you need a nice, bushy mother plant to take cuttings from. In this example I used my Pre '98 Bubba Kush mother plant. I LST'd her so I had lots of tops available to cut as clones.

The second step, which can be done first if you wish, is washing your cloner. There are many threads on this site that describe how to build a DIY cloner. I had a friend make mine its pretty much a smaller black container to hold water with 12 sites on the top where neoprene disks hold the clones. Add a pump and some tubes and you've got a cloner. Make sure your cloner is as clean as possible at all times, you don't want any algae or other issues.

I clean the cloner as the blade soaks in 91% alcohol.

Now it's time to take some clones...Now I will start a new post.

Now that you're all clean and prepared, it's time to clone. Take your mother plant and find a nice top to be cloned. I chose this top because the growth was extremely healthy and it seemed like a good size cutting to take. Not too big, not too small.

Now that you've found the part of the plant you will be taking a cutting from, it is time to do just that.. take the cutting. Cut at a 45 degree angle versus straight across.

Now that you've got your cutting in hand, it's time to shave the outer layer of skin that's on the bottom part of the cutting, close to where you made the cut. Take the clean razor blade and gently shave the outer rough layer of skin to expose the softer stem.

Then dip the tip of the stem in your rooting gel.

Stick the cutting into your cloner, Rockwool cube, Root Riot, or pot of soil and that's that for now!!

Now we play the waiting game. If you've got cubes or Root Riots or something similar you're going to want to keep the medium moist. I use a bubble cloner so the stems of my clones are constantly in water. I get roots in about 8-13 days, depending on strain.

Here's the full cloner, waiting to develop some nice, pearly white roots.

And here are the roots of a Sour Bubble clone after two weeks in the cloner. It's stem was broken and I thought it wouldn't make it but...

When the roots are developed it's time for a transplant into soil or whatever medium you desire.

After the cloning session my mother plant is thinned out but still looking good.

Thanks for checking it out! I hope this helps. A little stoned so I may have not explained things too well but I hope you understand it all.

OSG you explained just fine! Great info, thanks! When I get this far it's tips and pics like you're showing that teach us newbies what to do!
