i put out clones pretty well rooted in 1/2 gallon milk, 1/2 n 1/2, juice containers. i'm a guerrilla grower and can take a few out at a time for transplant. for seedlings i use quart cardboard containers that are same height/depth but less diameter. they are ususally 8" to 18" tall and well rooted. the root system when i plant is buried down (bottom of root ball) almost 12". 3" rootball outdoors doesn't have enough depth imo.
i get leaf drop when i transplant with strong sun. i defoliate most of the fan leaves leaving stems and stalk and some green. no leaf drop, large (100% this year) % survivors.
it slows down the growth but gives the plant lots of time to adjust w/o having to support the leaves until the girl is established. then they take off and do their thing.
i use the cardboard container as a top moisute barrier covered with soil and then field collected mulch. after watering the transplant i use my foot to press down the soil. the pressed soil eliminates most plants from being dug up and locks in the moisture barriers.
my theory on fresh transplants being dug up is possums, rats, etc. sense the soft freshly dug soil and dig down for a nice meal of some young nest critter baby food.
anyhow, i've got over 50 plants done this way this year and am still putting out the last and not one has died.
