Cloner temp help

Hi I made a cloner box just like the one in high times..I think like 2 months ago. Today is the about the 4th day and there are no signs of roots...I stuck a tempature gauge in the cloner and it read 80deg...I'm using spring water and clone gell and t5 lights. I feel the temp is too hot and that's why I'm not seeing anything? Can someone shed some light on this subject? I may be to anxious. Thank you. (temp on top is 76-78 hum 45- 50%)

80 is way to hot, you need to be down around 70 if you can get there. All that will happen with the hot water is bacteria all your clones will die. (has happen to me)

What I did was get a gallon water jug and fill it with water freeze it then put it in your rez, once in the morning & once at night that kept my temps perfect. Pain in the @ss but better then killin your clones. I bought a 60 site ez clone and the pump heats the water up big time. Called the company they said "yes we have been having trouble with the pumps heating the water up.":wallbash:

Great idea, thanks. Last question: do you think my clones are done for? I looked at the bottom base where I cut and it's a little brown....?

Dunno about the high times cloner, but for my 3, yes THREE! cheapo aero cloners, - I'd shoot for 78 ish - lil higher lil lower but really close

Clones kinda wana lil higher temps than growing plants.
and don't need lights very close at all - they need roots not clorophil.

definatly trim the decaying and dead crap off the cuts - get into good healthy tissue - anything dead and unhealthy has gotta go

less light and a lil cooler and you should be golden.

Never hurts to take an extra cut or two - or three.

more plants leads to healthyier plants, leads to better harvests.

My cloners work best with straight tap water - usually about 7.0-7.2 pH and tds is 150-ish (kinda minerally but not severe)

I'll bring the light up too, I do have it close to the tops.

as far as the cut tips turning brown, I disagree with ppl. don't retrim them.[ probly too late now, but if it happens again in a few days at least you won't freak out. ;) ]

The root tips will often turn a light to dark brown, this is the plants rooting hormones collecting in the tip so it can produce roots...*but this should be on the very tip of the tip ya know? like not brown or dark color leaching more then a few mm up the stem...just the very edge...this usually happens within the first few days..if you haven't trimmed them all already, i'd say give em a few more days..4 days isn't very long to start seeing any signs of roots.

I had 3 cuts wilt yeaterday re-trimmed the bottom and this morning they are back and looking like the other 12.

15 cut and 15 healthy.

what works for one, may or may not work for you.

I already cut them again. It appears they are doing worse now. I took some pictures.***the frozen water jugs are working great though*** I think im going to have to get some new clippings..i just feel like they are not going to root now. the leaves are turning yellow and the stems where I re-cut and sliced down the middle look bad. Should I cut my losses now?

Read the sig.

I guess the slime is a issue then...I did notice when I grabed the pump it was slimy...I did not think anything of it though. Being that this is my 1st time growing can you explain to me in laymens terms on how to fix my cloner issue....ie. heat issue and slime. I would appreciate it.

if the "brown stuff" you clipped off the tip of your clones was in fact the rooting hormone collecting then your clones may not have enough hormone left to redistribute to the tips again...personally i judge how well/quickly clones are going to root by how quickly they turn brown on the tips..the first time I saw it I freaked out and thought I didn't clean my razor blade well enough and they got infected...a few days later they were popping roots...

can we see pics of the tips? personally at around 80 degree water temps it takes *me* bout 2 weeks to feel any slime buildup on the inside of the cloner(no light getting in and straight tap water)...by then they all have roots, or will have them in a few days so it's a non issue...(for me)

but if it's mold or somehting else collecting, then disregard what I've said. :joint:

keep the t5's pretty high above the clones; about 30"
too much light will slow down rooting; and richyrich's sig above is very helpful
