Nice grow Dave ;)
A cross with Durban and Thai would be great.
Thanks for sharing:tiphat:

Its the Dream Cross for me Numide. Ive had it in mind since the beginning. Its disappointing I got no males from the Thai Stick, but I have 3 Durban Poison Males I can cross to the best Thai Females. It'll be fun to do some progeny testing to see who produces best.

Who knows what surprises lay in the future. Ill share them when that day comes though.

Afropips Durban Poison D Day 48 Flowering Update

Afropips Durban Poison D Day 48 Flowering Update

These pics are from the 5th everyone. A little late, but I thought everyone would still want to see how she is developing. So far no more nanners have sprung up. None Ive noticed at least. Still keeping my fingers crossed though. I can't say I notice any anise/black licorice smell coming from her right now, but maybe that comes during the cure..Just have to wait and see. Another month or so and I should be harvesting the tops of her that are ready, and allowing the lowers time to develop more. Just like Im doing with the Mr. Nice Shit A1 Clone.

She's a hungry girl, and Ive been supplementing the Osmocote every other day with GH 3 Part Series Flora/Micro/Bloom at 6.25/6.25/5ml/gallon. Total PPM usually is 500-550. Im not always consistent with my measuring, which why the ppm varies somewhat. Tonight, I fed her 16 oz. @ 450ppm. Ill slowly be lowering fertility levels as she gets closer to finishing, but still enough fertility to allow for a secondary harvest.

My last measurement of fertility levels in the soil solution was 1000ppm a few days ago. On the low side, and my lower leaves are reflecting that as nutrients are being translocated to top growth that needs it more. Normally I shoot for 1500ppm in the soil solution for flowering, but the other Durban Poison do gang-buster at even 2000ppm, but that really is on the luxurious side and pushing it. I could increase the feed and try to get her back to 1500ppm, but Ive seen the drawbacks of trying too quickly to increase fertility levels in the media. Its safer just to manage the decline in ec/ppm levels to avoid any ugly unwanted regrowth like seen in the previous Thai-B pics.

Her upper fan leaves are also a lighter shade of green than I would like at this point. Being directly under the 600w MH Ushio bulb will really over-do it even at over 2ft away. Ive pushed her further outside the lights footprint to help alleviate the problem. The praying leaves may look cool, but its a sign of too much light. When the leaves go vertical, its in an attempt to reduce the light striking the surface of the leaves.

The other durban poisons are further away from the light. They've not stretched into the danger zone, and their leaves lay flat, with the perfect shade of green. They also have EC levels of 4.0+ and PPM over 2k. Is that shocking to anyone?

Okay, I think Ive made you read enough, you can look at the pics now, but who am I kidding? Thats the first thing everyone looks at.

Day 52 Flowering Update

Day 52 Flowering Update

We've eclipsed the half century mark my friends. 52 Days into flowering now, and Im thinking another 4 weeks before she is ready to take the top down. 80-85 Days most likely. I really like to give my ladies plenty of time for those buds to swell. I like em real curvy before I harvest them. Were getting soooo close. I can't wait to sample some of this after a long slow-dry & cure. I should also cure some of it the malawi cob way too. Thanks for that thread Tangwena. Looks like an awesome way to enjoy some mary jane.

Now for some Day 52 Flowering Pics.

picture.php

Note the yellow tips. This often occurs when fertility levels drop below 1000ppm, and is a good indication you're not feeding your plants enough in flowering if this happens. Especially if there is a general chlorotic look to your plant(fan leaves faded of green color), or yellowing & leaf abscission of lower leaves. DP-D is showing all the symptoms of low-fertility levels at this point, but Im not quite ready to accept that.

picture.php

Ive already cleaned up the lowers, removing all the fan leaves that had been sucked clean of nutrients. You'll still see some yellowing of the lowest fan leaves. Still quite the looker though, in her middle age compared to her younger sisters.

Durban Poison Group 2 Day 23 Flowering

Durban Poison Group 2 Day 23 Flowering

Im not stopping with two updates tonight, Im going for three, and Ive got some great Thai Stick A shots lined up for a later time too.

Its group 2 turn to shine now. They are so beautiful and green with such fast developing buds that are quickly becoming frosty and covered in sticky resin glands. Ive even got two strong magenta/purple ones among the 4. The other ones show just a touch of color to them, but just barely. I doubt they'll ever be as colorful as the two standouts in this group.

Now onto some pics. I hope your bandwidth is plentiful.

Group Shots Top and side Shot.
6 Durban Poison in there, but the one in the far left back hand corner is hard to see. And 1 TS-A @ 139 Days Flowering 11/13.

Thai Stick A Update Day 139

Thai Stick A Update Day 139

Well If Im already up this late, I may as well go ahead and do a TS-A update too. How long does she have? Who knows. I keep re-evaluating on a weekly basis. White pistils continue to develop, but Im now seeing accessory pigments(Anthocynanin & Carotenoids) appearing in the foxtails now that the plant is very low on N. Fertility levels are hovering around 200ppm atm. Lots of the small fan leaves shriveling up and becoming completely necrotic, sucked clean of all water and nutrients.

Im gonna ride this wave until this end with no more feedings. It'll make trimming much easier if half the little annoying leaves fall out by harvest.

She may not appear very frosty too the eyes, but handling the bud for a few shots left my fingers so greasy and sticky I couldn't strike my lighter to enjoy some Shit. It took many tries but now I can sorta use it. I wish I had a good camera with a macro lens for some really nice shots of resin heads. More heads on a single calyx than some of my Mr. Nice Shit buds...

Thanks Dr. King. They should both should turn out something nice, or at least I hope. Maybe as good as that yummy looking OTH and Green Haze you've grown out. The anticipation is driving me crazy.

Week 8 Durban Poison D Update

Week 8 Durban Poison D Update

Hey Gang. We are 8 weeks into the flowering cycle of DP-D. She's slowed down in packing on weight this last week. Kinda in the midflower slump where nothing seems to happen. Over the next few weeks, I expect her to swell and bulk up though. Im thinking 11 weeks, maybe 12 before any tops will be ready to harvest.

No nanners have sprung up since the initial one I spotted. The males in the veg room have actually begun to drop pollen sacks on me. Ive removed the sacks before pollen has fallen, but I should just go ahead and collect pollen now if they're intent on dropping pollen. Ill have to isolate them in something very soon if I want to collect pollen.

I pulled her away from the bright lights, and put up a strip of black panda film in the background to help with the flash being reflected. It helped some. Maybe a black cloth would be better. Either way, you can really see the beautiful color this lady has going on. Who wouldn't want to have that pretty lady in their garden right now?

Fertility Measurements: I also took a measure of fertility levels when I took these pics, and Total PPM was at 1260. Lower leaf abscission has stopped, and I didn't need to clean up any lower leaves before the pics. Ill try to keep it around this level for the next ten days, and then make any necessary adjustments.

Pic time everyone!

HA! Ill put Viagra, and all the other companies out of business. I wont judge you, so do what you feel is necessary :)

I can't believe I waited sooo long before starting these seeds. If I only knew the beauty that lay within, I would have started so much sooner.

Speaking of clone mothers, the clone of DP-D I took has rooted. Even though I took it from DP-D late into flowering, it rooted first actually. Now the clone needs to reveg. No luck on success with the other Durban Poison cuttings yet. I kinda suck at cloning. Rather inconsistent lately. Got to improve upon that.

Once I get some clones going, then you'll really see some plants that give you hard-ons. My 2nd run with these ladies will be even better than this one.

https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=80089

Oooo Im excited that you are starting your DP beans. I can't wait to see what they look like. I know Numide here is growing some DP as well that are very narrow leaf. I hope you'll do a grow journal. Id love to follow along.

Thanks Donald. I wish everyone could partake in what Im growing here. Im sure it'd be a smash hit with all. I can at least share pictures for everyone to salivate over, or more in the case of Idiit

If anyone hasn't grown out a pure sativa or a mostly sativa hybrid, do it and look at the buds under a scope and you'll be blown away. So many gooey resin glands packed tightly together with very short stalks. Sometimes so short, you'd swear there isn't any stalks the heads sit on. Kinda look like a field of mushrooms sometimes.

No seeds made yet, but Ill be making Durban Seeds since I have 3 males. Ill collect pollen from all 3 males, mix it up, and dust each lady for the sake of preserving as many genes as I can. After that Ill narrow down the best females and cross them with the males. Progeny testing will then be used to find the best male/female pairing. After that, personal projects will begin. Ill do my best to make the OP seeds available as freebies at the Boo/Bay. Id love for other people get a chance to grow out this variety someday.

I didn't get any male Thai's so no seeds in the future there. I will be crossing the male Durbans with the best Thai female once Ive narrowed that down. We've got a long way to go before any of this will be accomplished though. When it happens though, I bet the offspring will be something worthy of sharing here.

bump this thread. check out those purple Durban poisons!

remember the Durban poison that put some many tokers in the hospital in Melbourne was a purple dp.

Old post from 20'Thai on O.G forums.

Purple Durban

"In Ozz in the late 70's they imported some 100%Sativa Purple durbanPoison from Africa that made everyone see things that weren't there when they first smoked it. Many people had to be rushed to hospital and shot up with a high dose of pure Valium to calm them down. Once you were use to visual and audible effects of that batch of durban, it would completely annihilate even the most hardened of smokers for over 8hours...and I mean smokers that could bong 7-8grammes of the finest imported Thai Sticks per day without consequence, that were sold 'before and at the same time' this PurpleDPoison came into Ozz. The PurpleDPoison had some seeds in it, and I grew it for 4 years straight. The offspring for ONLY the first generation/year were purple and thereafter reverted back to the standard green. But none of us could make it as potent as the original batch was that came in from Africa. Close - but no cigar, if you know what I mean. The farmer in charge of that grow in Africa was a Cultivar-supreme at the true sense of the word as the dope was not laced with anything I assure you - it was straight from the BlackMans'Hand who harvested it out of an organic field of soil inside some jungle. One smoke, and you knew 'that' immediatly, as it tasted as smooth and as sweet as could be. After some people were hospitalised(for a day) as a result of it, authorities here obtained samples of it and thoroughly tested it to find that it had nothing else but an extordinary amount of Cannabinoidal resins in it - higher than anything else they'd ever tested before. No chemical additives whatsoever. The Media here at the time nicknamed it 'Purple Poison'.

There have been over time in many countries differing imported buds like Thai, NamBlacks and ColumbianReds that would stone you for as long as the PurpleDPioson did. Yet when seeds were taken from the samples that had them in them and were grown out the following year by home growers, they were never quite as strong as the original either. Very strong, yes, but not as outrageously potent as the originals. Why? Perhaps the mass-scale farmers of those times were using secrets passed down from genereation to generation that they never divulged to anyone and have since died with them...who knows? Your guess is as good as anyone elses.
Perhaps growing dope on a mass scale (guerilla type), works in the same way that cooking food in a massive oven on a mass scale does also - it aids to enhance itself from the mass aromas involved. Possible, but once again, not definite. What is definite though, is that there are much stonier smoking buds than those that do it for you for 3-4hours. Go to a SpanishFlea market near Madrid at the end of their/your growing season, and you'll see what I mean. Ask for KalamataRed Sativa buds, and enjoy a heavy Duty 6-8 hour experience...but they'll be twice the price of the thai and columbian buds they sell. In Spain, and many other places, after you've been around in the game a while, you'll find buds that will match the finest there is...and certainly much longer lasting than the MTF(?) you enjoyed. But the finest, if you are the right person, will find you - you, will not find it. It is an unwritten Lore of the cannabisKingdom.
Take care.

maybe tangwena has the answer; proper old skool African cure:

https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=309172

waiting for the aged smoke reports in a few months.

I found several of the landraces I've grown to be super oily/gooey.

I smoke cigars and I like the oily ones. it takes a long time for the oily cigars to age sufficiently so that they are at optimum smoke potential:

The general rule of thumb is to age stronger, more oily cigars to allow the oils in the different levels of tobacco (filler, binder, wrapper) to comingle or "marry," allowing a more even distribution of flavors. It will tame a strong, slightly harsh cigar (not a crappy harsh, but just strong and slightly young tasting - ie - opus), therefore may actually take away from the flavors of an already mild cigar.

It also all depends on your definition of "age." Some people let a cigar sit for 6 months to a year and think it's well aged. Others will look at 3 -5 years minimum.

This is why I now have two aging humidors. One for short term aging (1-3 years) and one for long term aging (3+ years).
perhaps there is a strong correlation between the oily factor in sativas and the pronounced improvement in their high effects. i'm saying maybe this is why we need to age many sativa landraces longer and also why after extensive aging they smoke so nice.

maybe the tangwena type cure can actualize inherent smoke potential?

Hey Dave! Just figured I would stop by and watch the work you're doing with that lovely durban. In fact, I am interested in purchasing a pack or two of the seeds you got just to hopefully find something as aesthetically pleasing, and hopefully special. Where did you acquire them from if I may ask, I may have overlooked the previous post - sorry to make you repeat it if you did already explain that.

Are your males exhibiting any pre-flowering in veg, or any drastic differences in the phenotype expressions thus far?

Ive read that post before, but completely forgotten about it. Thanks for the reminder. Id love for the DP to come close to that type of powerful high.

I definitely believe cob-curing is the special trick that brings out the greatness. Ill definitely be trying it out myself soon. I have Shit A1 sitting in a dark closet right now that would be a perfect opportunity to try this with. The buds have swollen up nicely in the last few weeks since the first harvest of the top cola. She will be chopped and hung up to dry out after I get some pics of her you all.

Speaking of that top cola, I couldn't make it a month in the paper bag. I was slowly pinching here and there, but making sure to save at least half of it for 2+ weeks. I smoked a bunch of it with my nephew and his friend, and rocked their world all night with it. They absolutely loved the smell and taste of it. Lots of compliments on the strength of it too, even though I find Shit to be average for me, but Im an all day toker non stop. I need something stronger to cut through my buildup.

What really stood out to me was how much denser the calyxes became after a little over two weeks. The beautiful little foxtail at the crown was rock hard. Id pinch that foxtail tightly and she didn't give one bit. A huge difference in density compared to buds that get cured in mason jars. Ill definitely be using paper-bags for at least two weeks before going into mason jars from now on. I definitely recommend to everyone if you cure/store with mason jars.

Welcome Genes. Im glad you found my thread. Lots of pages at this point, so Im not surprised you've had trouble finding the info you need. I have bad news for you. Afropips DP sold out 3-4 years ago. I got the last two packs from an Italian Distributor, and Ive never seen another pack on line since. You may get lucky with Nguni Durban Poison seeds. I think there is at least one more Company offering DP seeds too, but the name eludes me. Namide is growing it atm.

She definitely is a looker. Even if she isn't the most potent lady in the garden, just for look alone I would grow her.

Ive had 2 or 3 of the Durban males drop pollen sacks and pollen in my veg room. Males always seem to do this to me when I keep them in small containers too long. Once they get too big, they stress out and flower on me. My Shit male is doing nothing of the sort, but he's a smaller male in a 1 gallon pot. The DP males are in 1 gallon pots for over 2 months now and really need a transplant tbh.

One will really stand out from the other two males. You all will really dig the leaves on it. I dont have any pics to show right now, but Ill try to get an update in the next couple days.

Sadly, my hard drive crashed on me when I came home last night. Ive spent my whole day reinstalling my OS and all the required drivers on my new 1tb Hard drive. Ill attempt to retrieve my photos from the drive if possible. Thankfully my albums here are loaded with tons of pictures, so Im not freaking out over it. Now with that extra 750gb I can take and store even more pictures now.

Time to crash now. Im pooped.
