are we still discussing chickens?
I told someone the other day that I raise meat birds. Was at the grocery picking up produce discards for them. Standing there with my buckets and bins to swap out for the ones they've filled up.
She said- why are taking garbage from the grocery
me- trying to supplement my animals diet with diverse organic ingredients for free and reduce the waste flow to the dump.
her-what animals eat this?
me-my egg hens, meat birds, and rabbits.
her-what's a meat bird
me- a bird raised to be consumed. in my case, chickens.
her-why would you raise chickens to eat? do you know how cheap I can buy chicken?
me- I do know how cheap I can buy chicken, I also know how and why I can buy that chicken so cheap. Chose not too support a broken system.
end of conversation. YAY for the win....
I do not eat chicken anymore except on rare occasions. I do not like how they treat the birds and the drugs they put into them.
If you were to ever walk into a TURKEY barn a few days before they clean them out and harvest the birds.... You would never eat turkey again....UNLESS you raised it yourself.
same for chicken...
I raise two turkeys a year. Gooble gooble!!!
When I was in school I worked weekends for a small farmer. We'd do a 100 chickens on a saturday, than 50-60 turkey on sunday. Kosher kill.
Good 8 hour workday.
