Feds Predict Major Drop in Marijuana Prices
Posted in Chronicle Blog by Scott Morgan on Mon, 11/12/2007 - 6:48pm

Unless you measure success by the number of people arrested, the failure of the war on marijuana is becoming more obvious than ever before. A new Department of Justice report, Drug Threat Assessment 2008, reveals that increased indoor cultivation is flooding the U.S. market with high quality marijuana. As a result, marijuana users may soon be getting more bud for their buck:

In the section, "Predictive Estimates," the report concludes:
• Increased cannabis cultivation may result in reduced marijuana prices.
The recent increases in cannabis cultivation and marijuana production within the United States coincide with the continued flow of marijuana from foreign sources, which may lead to market saturation [in] major markets. This saturation could reduce the price of the drug significantly. [CelebStoner.com]
That's good news for marijuana enthusiasts and bad news for anyone invested in trying to eradicate America's #1 cash crop. Ironically, drug warriors have often cited increased potency as evidence that marijuana is becoming more harmful. This is all nonsense, because users adjust their dose to achieve the desired effect, just as an alcohol user might drink a 12 ounce beer, but not 12 ounces of vodka (not to mention the lack of evidence that marijuana is harmful even in large doses). Nevertheless, the real story here is that marijuana eradication efforts are failing to affect price and supply.

What then is the point of spending billions in an unsuccessful attempt to eradicate this plant? What desirable outcomes are being achieved in exchange for the innocent lives disrupted or lost in the course of this fruitless crusade? Reasonable people can disagree about marijuana use, but who among us cannot think of better things for police to do than this?

Anyone who ever thought we might someday purge this plant from our borders can now be relieved of that foolish notion. Opponents of marijuana and its users must now take stock of the situation and ask whether the indefinite continuation of this endless cat and mouse game is desirable.

It is amusing, perhaps, to the marijuana fans among us to hear that the price of a ¼ bag could go down soon. But remember how much our nation has sacrificed in a hopeless effort to prevent this from happening. Remember how many of our friends and neighbors have been yanked off the streets, forced out of school or work, even lost custody of their children, all because of the stupid idea that we could successfully wage war on marijuana.

Yeah, but with inflation and the price of everything else rising perhaps the price of Cannabis will just not rise as fast.

Thats crazy thinking.Prices of legitimate commodities may fluctute with supply and demand but thats not how it works in the black market.I've been involved in black market bafoonary for 30 plus years and I have never once seen a price decrease in an illegal drug from oversupply.People would sit on the product if need be but that wouldn't be necessary since demand always outpaces supply.

Not to mention that (at least in my experience) people who grow at home either give it for free or charge about 5 times as much compared to the mexi-brick you get on the cheap.

If anything it would increase the price, assuming the supply decreased from external sources. I mean aside from the commercial level growers and a few delusional fools seeking "easy" money.

I suppose the criminal element responsible for bringing in all this weed could grow in houses but if it was easier to do it that way they wouldn't be guerrilla growing and smuggling. As all of us know, doing it in your home is a lot more expensive and risky. Simple math I guess. :)

But like The American said, people running the black market are doing it out of greed and greed means charge as much as you can get.

American, I totally agree. I don't think it matters how much pot we have in this country. Its just like everything else with us- we want/need more. There will never be enough.

Linenoise- The 'criminal element' is growing it in houses!!! Google "Vietnamese, marijuana, growhouse" or "FL growhouse" or "cuban, marijuana grow" and you will see how it's getting done these days. And that just pertains to how they do it here, let alone abroad. Since 9/11 smuggling has been getting much more expensive/risky, and it is becoming easier to just sneak the people across and have them grow it here instead.

Plus- with the falling value of the US dollar, and its falling buying power in Canada, canasian weed will essentially become more expensive for people looking purchase it there and smuggle it here. This should result in a rise in the price of imported beasters. Anyone seen that? If not, it could very well indicate that the grass is being grown here by the same people that previously grew in in canada.

This must be a total coicidence, but I just talked to a connect of mine, and he told me that the price for a 1/4 (of his same herb) was going down 20 bucks (now 40 bucks less than another friend). Sort of wierd that I hop on here, maybe a good 30 seconds later, and read this. God bless us growers....

The day the feds get it right regarding the future of weed prices is the day I stop growing. Demand for good buds is so outrageous compared to the supply the price isnt going anywhere. They should probably measure the schwag supply to figure it out better. Theres still a large enough demand for schwag to keep the mexicans constantly squeezing it in thru the borders with not much sign of slowdown. I would expect the numbers theyre talking about to fairly eliminate the schwag market.

My weed is PRICELESS. Its Harvest time, of course its going to be cheaper. Just wait till March. "the weed is crappy and the count is off". Supply and demand. Supply and demand.
