If you can drown a plant in dirt how come you can grow one in water? And how long can you keep them out of the water while you clean your tank??

Constant powerful aeration of the water. Either by airpump or waterfall. Oxygen to the roots is one of the reasons for explosive growth in DWC. Watering soil only introduces oxygen that one time. If it doesn't drain out (sucking air down into the roots as it leaves) the oxygen gets used up and the plant drowns.

How long can they go out of water? No clue, I never tried. I save cleanings for between grows.
