Welcome CC! Try it and you'll like it!

Welcome CC! Try it and you'll like it!

While I was there, however, you and your husband, the lay priest of Ko, being apprehensive of the eyes of others, brought me food in the middle of the night. Never fearing even punishment from the provincial officials, you are persons who were ready to sacrifice yourselves for me. Thus, though it was a harsh land, when I left, I felt as if the hair that had been shaved from my head were being tugged from behind and as if with each step I took I were being pulled back.

Mornin' my friends!!!!

I love this, pretty much sums up where i am right now, but im still embedding it deeper into my head and heart every day!!!

I got a bit of a sun tan, BURN!!!! :yoinks: yesterday but its all good!

Ya know i just wanted to say about my mom, that i am blown away by her giving nature, after reading what i wrote it sounded to me like it was no big deal, but there are few people like her with that nature around anymore it seems. I just want to see her really happy, not having to worry about petty shit like bills and new tires on her truck. Like i said she deserves the best and if she chooses not to reach for those things i want to provide them for her. Nothing would make me happier.

Because she brings so much happiness to so many people everyday.

Is that wrong?

peace and love my friends!!!!

CC

I'm very pleased you made it! CC is my friend and we have been discussing Pot Smoking and Growing within the parameters of a Buddhist prespective. In fact, we have so much in common, the first thing I thought about were us Chanting Buddhist Growers and how CC is surely one of us! This reminds me of my great friends LeonardoDaVinci and Alwaystotheleft, they were once seeking the Reasoning and Truth within Buddhism and eventually found Gohonzon with the great Ichinen of Thomas directing us as a spirit guide through the words of Nichiren Daishonin. We (Babba, Always, Leo, Southern Girl, GordyP, Mrs.Babba, Ms.MyohoDisco, Fallen, MyDearAmigo PersonalMeds, MyBrotherfromanothermother RESPECT and smiles and myself) started Chanting from Thomas' shakubuku efforts (others like Socal and Hitman have already been fully vested) and continue to chant off our own steam, the rarity of these circumstances is so incredibly scarce this day in age that we have surely made good causes in the past to chant the daimoku of the Lotus Sutra today! To find the entity of our lives on the internet, especially on a cannabis related site, IS SURELY TAILOR MADE FOR US!

IN BUDDHISM THERE ARE NO COINCIDENCES!

Faith in oneself, will lead to finding joy within our struggles. Its a proven fact in our lives, that when we are truely courageous and stand up for the causes we truely believe in we can make a difference. But how often do we retreat into the "BOX" of our comfort zones and give into "ILLUSIONS"? Enough for me to have to remind myself everyday, through chanting (repeating the words) Nam-myoho-renge-kyo! that...

Orginally Posted by PasstheDoobie

Personally, I always express it as "Return or Devotion of Oneself to the Mystic Law of Cause and Effect through the Teachings of the Buddha." In my mind I always understand I am saying, "Return or Devotion of Oneself to the Mystic Law of Cause and Effect through the Teachings of the Buddha of Beginningless Time." I then break it down as:

"Nam"--To Return to, or Devote Oneself to

"Myo"--Mystic; or that which is beyond the capacity to perceive

"Ho"--Law; or unchanging principle

"Renge"--Lotus Flower; symbolic of the simultaneity of the Law of Cause and Effect which we believe governs all things

"Kyo"--Sutra; or the teachings of a Buddha

I AM AN INDIVIDUAL BUT I AM ALSO ONE WITH THE UNIVERSE (INCLUDING FRIENDS AND FOES ALIKE) SO WE ARE TWO BUT NOT REALLY TWO! HENCE MAKING GOOD CAUSES WILL LEAD TO BUDDHAHOOD!

We all have fundamental darkness, the little devil within us screwing things up, sometimes its a big devil sometimes a silly afterthought, the bottom line is through Nam-myoho-renge-kyo! we can conquer that aspect and have the wisdom and control to couple with our self-sustained faith for the production of our greatest TRIUMPHS AND VICTORIES!

LIFE IS A WIN OR LOSE STRUGGLE! YOU MUST BE BRAVE TO OVERCOME THE UNCEASING NEGATIVITY IN OUR LIVES!

So, Nichiren Daishonin came along in Fuedal Japan and outlined a practice for ourselves and a practice for others. The basis of this is Nam-myoho-renge-kyo! That is why everyone is welcome and it applies to all of us, we are not only compassionately practicing to improve our lives and build our spirit into a Treasure Tower but we are also spreading the joy of practicing the Mystic Law of Cause and Effect with others as means to create the Buddhaland which is my heart in our physical world.

Together we make a difference whenever we post here on this thread, or speak about this with others. Its our life to life connections that sustain the movement and maintain the growth in our lives. I try my best to teach others (as a tool to also reaffirm to myself) the ACTUAL PROOF AND BENEFIT YOU EXPERIENCE IN THIS PRACTICE. My life is an evolving example of this and my true identity is here in this thread in the form of Guidance from Sensei Toda, Tom, Sensei Ikeda, the lives of President Makiguchi and Ted Osaki and Tony Matsuoka and countless others whom unite under the flag of WORLD PEACE. Kosen-rufu is a concept that entails the world wide propagation of The Mystic Law of Cause and Effect and taking part in creating the environment to welcome my Mentors into my very own apartment is creating peace, prosperity and growth in my life. I rarely stagnate if I keep chanting and revving up my engine! I am planning my next victory every next moment, I am more conscious of who I am and where I belong and want to go. I know everyone has their own dreams and desires and guess what, THEY WILL LEAD YOU TO BECOME ENLIGHTENED!

Remember this, Gohonzon is the Key! Nichiren Daishonin inscribed Gohonzon for our Happiness, I would certainly look into this more by attending SGI meetings and networking with like minded individuals close by! Thats another benefit of this organization, doesn't matter where you are, you surely have a buddha brother or sister closeby. Reach out and HUG SOMEONE!

I gotta run, before I go.... THANK YOU CC FOR POPPING IN!!! I have been chanting for you to follow through with your "seeking spirit" and give chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo! a shot. You've really inspired me to keep the lines of communication open within my world and strengthen my faith.

I have only been practicing Buddhism for a year in this life so far, but righteous dudes and dudettes like the chanting growers have been doing this for countless lifetimes!

Lets be victors in every aspect of our days and inspire others to also triumph in their lives!

Hello all, just happened to stumble onto this thread and it's all very interesting if not a bit daunting at 388 pages! I would love to read up on the beliefs and practices, but would rather start with a book. I saw "the buddah in your mirror" and another book mentioned in the pages that I read. Any suggestions on which to get first? Thanks in advance!

Thats a link to Amazon . com directed to the Book Buddha in Your Mirror, recently released is the follow-up titled Buddha in Your Rearview Mirror. A Great place to Start but you just happened to stumble upon Chanting Growers Thread Butsu, The Chanting Growers Thread Buddha. The reason I say that is because as I print out the pages of this thread I am realizing this entire thread is the best basis for me to understand and explore Buddhism with remarkable clarity and consistent updates regularly upping the ante of education, understanding and guidance for fruitful execution for a self-reliant faith and overall outline for the micro and macrocosm within Buddhist philosophy.

From page 1 to Present, enclosed you will find hundreds of thousands perhaps millions of words of encouragement, wisdom and guidance to seek Gohonzon. We are a lay organization of Buddhists which means no priests and we also practice for ourselves and others by chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo! and starting a Human Revolution in our lives to convert suffering into Happiness and Joy. As Babba just posted today, goto www.sgi.org and check it out, if you goto www.sgi-usa.org you can click on Buddhism and begin to read writings and articles which are also conveniantly found in this thread day after day throughout the years.

Munkie, today is a great day because both you and CC declared your "seeking spirits" are in fact kindred spirits and now its upto your determination (as it always is and has been) to seek other Buddhists, so I will definately encourage you and anyone interested to attend a Buddhist meeting at someone's home in your neighborhood or area so that you can directly engage yourself as opposed to a more passive possibly less effective approach. One good turn deserves another!

Nam-myoho-renge-kyo! Send any of us a private message if you have personal questions or feel free to post on this thread any other inqueries that you would like to get out there. We're here if you need us....

 I have been chanting for a day like today and have had the benefit to experience the results firsthand so quickly! WOOOOOHOOOOO!

Buddhist sect appeals to growing number of Americans

This is how Woody Hochswender reasons that you may be a Buddhist and not even know it: "We all believe in the oneness of the world. We all believe there's spiritual truth inside us, an in-dwelling kernel. We all seek the happiness of others as a gateway to our own, right?"

To Hochswender, 55, a former fashion model turned writer on fashion and culture, these are all Buddhist ideas. And he sees them all around and gaining ground, like traffic on the interstate. They are a "common thread uniting many of the secular and religious philosophies of our times," he says.

Hence his new book, The Buddha in Your Rearview Mirror, a sequel to the 2001 best seller he co-wrote, The Buddha in the Mirror.

But putting a Buddha brand name on everything isn't enough for Hochswender. He advocates Nichiren Buddhism, one strand among hundreds of Buddhist sects, as the superhighway to inner peace and outer prosperity.

Zen Buddhism, as well as the Tibetan Buddhism of the Dalai Lama and contemplative traditions practiced by ascetic monks, are better known in American popular culture.

However, Hochswender believes Nichiren Buddhism is best suited to Western high-speed life.

Lotus Sutra is the truth

Nichiren, a 13th-century monk, believed that the Lotus Sutra (one of 84,000 "sutras" or oral teachings of the Buddha) was the essential and highest truth of all, because it says each person can reach enlightenment.

The route is simple. It calls for faithful, focused, rapid, rhythmic chanting of words drawn from Sanskrit, Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, which means "devotion to the wonderful dharma (law) of the Lotus Sutra," while facing a Gohonzon, a scroll inscribed with Chinese symbols for the Lotus Sutra.

Nichiren Buddhists need not master a strict discipline, renounce desire or retreat to the woods. No special clothes or postures are required. There are no obscure koans to mull - riddles such as "What is the sound of one hand clapping?"

"If you say Eastern religion, everyone thinks you have to speak really softly and eat brown rice. I eat meat. I drink. I smoke," he says.

Yet every day he also chants and concentrates on the benefits he seeks. Try it, and "you'll see immediate benefits, produced by you, proof in your own life now. Buddhism doesn't ask you to believe in God. Buddhism asks you to believe in yourself."

Practitioners include actor Orlando Bloom, musician Herbie Hancock, singer Tina Turner and U.S. Rep. Henry "Hank" Johnson Jr., D-Ga. In the biopic What's Love Got to Do With It, Turner is shown learning to chant, and she gains the strength to flee her abusive husband.

Expounding on his book in a cavernous Manhattan cafe, Hochswender's ice-blue eyes are aglow, and he sounds like a health-and-wealth televangelist, in tone if not message. "You can realize your enlightened self almost from the first day. And you can become enlightened exactly as you are.

"No matter what your goal is in chanting, at the very least you will become a more disciplined person," he says. "All of us want to be more disciplined."

Nichiren is worldwide

Nichiren Buddhism is practiced by 10 million people in Japan and millions more worldwide, according to Soka Gakkai International, the umbrella organization for Nichiren Buddhism. U.S centers are in New York and Los Angeles . The Boston Research Center for the 21st Century, which promotes human rights, non-violence and environmental ethics, was founded in 1993 by the organization's Japanese president, Daisaku Ikeda.

The sect has critics, particularly in Japan , where the organization is involved in politics. In the USA , it's been viewed askance for extolling materialism and this-world happiness over other values.

But the organization's U.S. spokesman, Bill Aken, argues: "It's not 'prosperity dharma.' We do think good fortune begins in your heart and manifests itself in your environment." People who master inner wisdom and compassion do better in the world, he says. Besides, "What's wrong with prosperity? If you polish your inside, you can surely see it in your outer manifestation."

Or, perhaps, the rearview mirror.

World of Buddhahood

World of Buddhahood

We have infinite resources bestowed by the universe. (INfinite!)

A passage from The Wisdom of the Lotus Sutra: "The entire universe is like our own personal bank account. The amount of fortune we can withdraw depends solely on our faith."

Here's that passage--pg. 185-6:

What, then, is the world of Buddhahood? From our standpoint, it is none other than faith.

President Toda said: "Attaining Buddhahood doesn't mean simply becoming a Buddha or heading in that direction. Honestly believing in the Daishonin's teaching of the true entity of life and that the ordinary person is most respectworthy, we are profoundly confident that we are Buddhas just as we are, from the eternal past into the infinite future. This is what it means to become a Buddha."

This comes down to faith, determination. It's a matter of our internal awareness.

THE ESSENTIAL TEACHING Is TO "RETURN TO THE ORIGINAL LIFE"

Ikeda: "The Life Span of the Thus Come One," the sixteenth chapter of the Lotus Sutra, describes the Buddha enlightened since the remote past, or the eternal Buddha. Just who is this Buddha? Commenting on the passage in the Lotus Sutra that reads, "It has been immeasurable, boundless hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, millions of nayutas of kalpas since I in fact attained Buddhahood" (Ls16, 225), the Daishonin explains: "'I' represents the living beings of the Dharma realm. Everyone in the Ten Worlds is referred to here in the word 'I'"(GZ, 753).

The eternal Buddha of the "Life Span" chapter means all living beings. We are all "eternal Buddhas." Ordinary people are Buddhas just as they are.

There are no grades or distinctions among people. We are all equal; we are all equally Buddhas. The only difference among people has to do with whether, or the extent to which, we realize this in our hearts. From the standpoint of Buddhism, that is the only meaningful distinction.

A Buddha is not someone displaying the thirty-two features or eighty features. Our lives, originally, are the Buddha. The universe itself is originally the Buddha. The appearance of the sun is a function of compassion. The illumination of the moon is also compassion, as is the beautiful respiration of green plants and trees. The entire universe is a great living entity carrying out activities of compassion from the beginningless past through the eternal future. This vast organism of compassion is the eternal Buddha. And the life of every being in the Ten Worlds is one with this Buddha of the "Life Span" chapter. Faith in the Mystic Law is the key enabling us to "return" to this original life.

Saito: Returning to the original life-that's the Lotus Sutra's essential teaching.

Ikeda: Exactly. The Daishonin clearly states in the "Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings," "The 'Life Span' chapter reveals the original life of all beings in the Ten Worlds. This chapter is called the essential teaching, or hommon, because it is the gate Jpn mon) to the truth of eternity Jpn hon)" (GZ, 799).

Suda: The great life of the Buddha enlightened since the remote past is the "original life" of the beings of the Ten Worlds. The essential teaching is so called because it enables us to return to this original life.

Endo: Since this original life is fundamentally a property of one's own life, there is no limit to the extent to which we can tap the power of the original Buddha.

Ikeda: The entire universe is like our own personal bank account. The amount of fortune we can withdraw depends solely on our faith. Faith means battling life's negative functions. Justice means opposing evil. Buddhist practice means struggling against adversity...

...It's a matter of embracing the Mystic Law. We need to steadfastly uphold the Mystic Law through every obstacle, confident that we truly have a mission for kosen-rufu.

Chanting steady and enjoying our small organic group every wednesday night. Have become quite close friends with another couple that have been chanting for close to thirty years. Sort of fun having someone close that we can get together with and chant in a a group besides just wednesdays. Amazing the awesome folks you meet at the SGI meetings. They will eventually join us here but have to figure out how to get them off that slow dialup connection.
In the middle of putting together a large shed to replace the building that fell over when the tree hit it this winter. Its been like spring here lately so the Babbas have one eye on the outdoor garden while doing some major cleanup . Wont be long we will be out in the sun enjoying our plants and outdoor daimoku. Wooo hooooo !!!! Believe me this indoor garden has kept me with my head down every night ....got this place rockin :)

Now, at the beginning of the Latter Day of the Law, I, Nichiren, am the first to set out on propagating, throughout Jambudvipa, the five characters of Myoho-renge-kyo, which are the heart of the Lotus Sutra and the eye of all Buddhas. These five characters are the heart of the Lotus Sutra and the source of the enlightenment of all Buddhas.

"Neither one's environment
nor other people can serve as excuses.
First and foremost, we ourselves are
to be courageous and to take action.
If we change ourselves, the environment, too, will change.
