changing light power midway through flower?

hello everyone,

Im running two 400w lights right now (800w total, (1) MH and (1) HPS) and its day 28 of flower.... i just got a 1000w HPS air cooled, and i was wondering if its ok to make the change to the 1000w.... i have some GDP and white rhino thats going fast and will prolly finish in 55 days ish, but then i have this ECSD and OG Kush that i know will go to day 65 for sure, and theyre just starting to fatten up.... so im thinking that the boost to the 1000w will be good for them....

what do you guys think?

800w = 85k lumens :pointlaug
1000w = 135k + lumens :yummy:

The extra 'juice' will do nothing but help. Maybe back off the lights (height) for a few days to give the plants time to adjust then lower and all will be be good .

that exactly how you want to run a grow. step up the wattage as the grow progresses. I start with flouros, then go to a 250 MH and finish with a 600 HPS.

my grow space is 4 feet deep X 6 feet wide.... about 6 feet high

im not familiar with the term foot print... what is that?

footprint is usually used as a light term... meaning how long x wide your light is being used... like 1000 watters are best as a 4x4 but good up to 6x6... so you could use a 4x6 footprint. I said plant footprint because i was wondering how much space your plants are growing in... if you have your plants spread out over a 4x6 area than those 2 400 might be better than the 1000 watter because they spread the light out better and will run cooler so you could get them closer to the plants... where they will have more usable light. However, the extra 200 watts might make up for that...but those 400 won't cover 4 feet as well as a 1000 watter would... but a 1000 won't cover 6 feet like 2 400s would. i dunno dude...

yeah darknight, i see what your saying

however, i usually keep my plants within a 4 foot wide area, i dont use the other 2 feet.... so basically theyre in a 4x4 area with about a foot on either side in the 4x6 box.... so i think that should agree with your thoughts.
i just installed my 1000w light and i absoultely love it.... its a sunsysten 8" aircooled system, just amazing....
when i take my light wand and position it around the room, it blasts all the way to the max when im even 1 foot below it, plus the light penetration is isnane.... at 2- 3 feet away from the bulb, its easily at the same level as when i saw 6-12 inches away from my 400w.... the 1000 is just insane.
im SOOOO excited to see how its going to grow out the ECSD now that theyre 30 days in,.... i hope that theyll fatten up....

thanks for the help

1000W on a light rail in 4x4 room? Maybe in a 4x8.

You made the right choice putting that 1000 in there when you did. If you can keep the temp down, and not stress the plants too much they will love you for it. In my experience smaller plants can take the stress of a 1000W even in early stages of growth. Meaning that once a plant has developed a healthy root system, it will be better suited to take in those watts. The less root development, the worse off your plants will be with the jump in power. Once roots are developed (under floros/ MH) the increased lumens of your 1000 HPS will be more benificial, instead of focusing too much growth on foliage at an early stage...which is why inexperienced growers throw seedlings, and small clones under a ton of light and wonder where the shock comes from...the roots need to develop first.

Peace all

the thing i like about the rail is the fact that you can get closer and they it makes it hard to burn with a 1000 k lamp. the light hits from all angles. i might be wrong but i believe he said 4 x 6 room. perfect size for a rail and one light. pay for itself easily in one grow.

I could be wrong but I read "4x6 box" with a grow space occupied by plants as 4x4. If that is the case, and he is growing in a cabinet or grow box (or similar), then I do not see the reason for buying a light rail, as the light would cover this space well (4x4)

the key here is the 1000w. more yield i would venture. rock on sensi.

SHIT YEAH!

In a word

HOOKITUP

Start that light all the way up and move down slowley - remember if ya sunburn them - they really don't like that.

Wana pix of one that flew (er, grew) too close to the 1000w sun? I just happen to have one I might could get a picture of,,, One week it was fine, maybe I turned it so the fan pushed it up - oh well,, :-(

you can work it down, having to raise it shouldn't happen.

or, do what I do and use boxes to raise the plants gradually.

--- now go man!!!!

Jus make sure ya have a good blower!

Jus make sure ya have a good blower!

A 1000 watter gets hot, make sure ya have a lota air goin through it and vented out of the room.Keep yer eye on the sweet spot (straight under the bulb) for signs of bleaching or lite yellowing of the top leaves. That old trick of holding the back of yer hand up to it and testin for it ta get hot won't work here,it'll still burn em.So start high and pay close attention ta plant color as ya drop it.Don't let me scare ya,I jus want ya ta know this baby is way more powerful than them 400's as far as reachin out,and I don't want ta see ya fry yer plants right off the bat.Hell ya,once ya gitter dialed in yer gonna love it.Jus go slow, better safe than sorry.Best of luck with it man,if ya have any problems jus hollar.Take care...BC

thanks everyone, really appreciate the help!

capt james - always a pleasure
BC - nice to meet you! thank you for your kind post! i am doing exactly what you said... it seems to be working great.... no burning yet, the light is about 10 - 18 inches from the plants, and i think they love it!!! i cant wait to see how the 1000w'er does after a week!

Overall i am very very happy with this 1000w and i am very impressed at how INSANELY bright it is!!!!!

on another note:

how long do bulbs last? when should i replace it? the guy i bought this from said it had 8 - 10 months on it.... what kind of decrease in lumans can i expect with this usage? i am definatly replacing it in a month or so with a hortilux EYE, no questions.... i just wanna know if its necessary to do it now, because this is crunch time for those girls!!!

thanks everyone!

I replace Hortilux every couple years - sooner if I can.

Does your power cord plug into the transformer? - I had a problem - so did JLP with the connector burning up. Keep an eye on ALL the equiptment - if ya know what I mean. Strange odors. loud noises, - better make that really loud noises and anything that smokes can not be good.

ya did wash all the oils off the bulb before turning it on?

I kinda like having a back up that is ready and willing - if something ever goes to crap, I can trow a whole new system in there in 10 minutes. I've been admiring the light mover now, thinking how much better it would work with that other 1000W hanging down.

It just keeps getting worse dosen't it?

more power

better beans

more power

new toys

MORE POWER!!!!

GAWD I LUV THIS HOBBY!

how do you clean a bulb? i thought your not really supposed to touch it.... what kind of cleaner do you use?

so do you think im good to go with this 1000w HPS bulb thats been used for 8-10 months? You say you replace every couple of years, i heard that your supposed to replace every year?
