I got my bulb yesterday, 15 days after ordering. All is well. I did manage to get Tom on the phone and he was very nice and explained that fedex lost my package but knew where it was and would send it. Two days later it was delivered. as far as I'm concerned, ATS solved the problem.

I just ordered another 400 watt CMH bulb. It came as usual; in about 8-10 days.
This one didn't come pre-burned like my first one did in 2005....anyways...it works fine....:tiphat:

both of them do

I assume you got it from ATS? I thought they pre-burned all of the CMH bulbs. Did you get the free HPS bulb with your order? Right now there giving an equal wattage HPS bulb with CMH bulb purchase. Dammit I just ordered 3 a couple weeks ago, lol, oh well. And how can you tell if it is pre-burned? Is it the dark burn looking marks on the glass near the socket? My new ones all look new.

A quote from their page "We are the Only Company to Pre-burn all lamps! Each Receive 3, 12 hour burn cycles to ensure the cermets seal is seated properly. This is 100% Needed as there is a High initial failure rate. If this is done you are sure to have a full life from your lamp.

Well I just noticed something!...I just took the new CMH bulb out. It has been on 12/12 for three weeks...and it STILL don't have any pre-burn look at the base?...go figure?...:chin:

no...I didn't get a free HPS bulb from them. I did buy a HPS Plantmax bulb; that came pre-burned & a GE Lucalox HPS, pre-burned too.

Air cooled reflector? I have a cooltube and even the HPS bulbs I've used for a year still look brand new, the only thing that looks like wear is some corrosion on the screw.

I'd love to try a CMH but there's still no solid numbers or comparison proving any advantage over HPS. You can obviously grow nice plants and pull good numbers with a CMH, but same thing goes for HPS. I called phillips and they said I'd probably be fine with either bulb but in general they recommend the Greenpower HPS for plants and the CMH for people.

been using cmh hps combo for over a year and for me it works great, way better than hps alone, check pics opinions/experiences wlcome?. imo hps spectrum is just not complete, ok lots o lummens but so monotone

First off, this thread is great! I only got through a few pages and love the idea! It is time for a switch in lights (I used a 1k and BARELY got by with it because of heat) and well its just too hot in my grow tent so its time to get back to basics. I havent come across anyone doing 2 of these lamps instead of a single 1k, but im sure it has been done! What is the heat output like on 2 of these versus a single 1k? I have a 6" can fan to exhaust the reflector(s) and it did OKAY on the 1k... so my though is that (2) 400w's still wouldnt throw as much heat as a 1k?

400w in a dr80 here with outlet of 4" :) 22~27'c in uk i also have a 400w hps in a cooltube which emits virtually no heat but i also have an inline low cfm fan bringing in air and 2 x 7" clip fans and a 12" too lol
but to cut a long story short small tent with a 400w is fine i have my cmh about 6-7 inches from the plant with no burn :) so if your area is 1.6m x .8m for example i cant see it being much of an issue as it would be taller for a start than my crappy dr80.

Let me guess, they still don't have a 1000w? I've only been waiting 3 years.

I hardly have the inside poop, but, it is my understanding that that is not in the near future. Phillips may change their minds and get some sort of progress underway...but, I wouldn't count on it.

Until then, there are a few people who say they have seen good results (especially from a quality standpoint) from adding a CMH to their HPS lamps.

hello all. been lurking for some time. i have a 100watt 4000k mastercolor bulb currently running in a PC case. i am going to build a cabinet just for flower, and use my PC for a mom or 2 and clones. my question is this, should i get another 4000k mastercolor CMH for flower cab, so same bulb in each space, a 3000k mastercolor CMH for the lower kelvin temp, or an HPS bulb for flower? i know, y'all probably dont like to hear about HPS. but i have read quite a bit on how they help bulk the buds up. i appreciate any feedback y'all can provide, thanks!

it's debatable if hps bulks up any more than cmh.
at these wattages it really doesn't matter.
cmh is better for scrogging and photography.
it's a more versatile bulb.
for scrog especially you could veg a good long time before the flip - all in the same space.
all you have to do is adjust the timer.
think of the yields!

Well thank you guanito for the response. But my question still remains. I guess I shouldn't have brought up HPS in a CMH thread, but each light does have its place in the garden. so I will change my question. Should I use 4000k mastercolor for flower and veg? Or should I use 4000k mastercolor for veg cab, and 3000k mastercolor for my flower cab.

I am a micro grower, and I am fortunate to even have a flower cab. Else I would run 12/12 from seed constantly. I can now keep a couple of moms and clone from them so I don't have to continue to buy seeds.

Thanks for all the input.

Nearly 4000 posts in this thread...I don't think you have to worry about mentioning HPS. lol...
Like guanito mentioned, at that wattage you are not going to see lots of variance in things.

I have run the 400CMH against the 400HPS and I cannot really tell much difference in bulk, however there is a discernible difference in the growth patterns, and possibly even resin production. And although not a big issue, there is also a slight difference in the coloring of the buds and leaf, albeit not really detectable in the finished product.

I've found the best scenario is to use the CMH in conjunction with HPS. This will bring about a fuller spectrum lighting arrangement.

ATS is now (limited time) offering a free Philips HPS with the purchase of a Retro-White CMH in 250 or 400 watts.

Thanks for the response baba ku!

I am mainly concerned with the color and bud production. I would think 3000k would be better for buds regardless of light, as long as they are both the same light with different color temps.

I think I will get a 3000k of the same wattage and just flip flop the bulbs between flower and veg every week or 2. Should be interesting.

I think the CMH grown plants resemble outdoor bud more - I also find outdoor plants to have a more complex high than HPS grown indoor plants, so there might be something there.

Once i have established what my current plants will do under HPS, I will try the CMH to look for improvements in quality of smoke. I don't mind the extra leaf, i usually vape anyways so anything with resin on it is good to use, it tastes great anyway. I would try the CMH right away if I could, but due to security issues earlier this year all my known plants are long gone and I have been forced to start over from seed, and it's nice to get a baseline with the HPS so i can tell if there's any improvement with the CMH. It's already been established that the yield is comparable between the two.

CMH users who formerly used HPS, did your plants improve in the quality of high after the switch?

Haha, I have some business with phillips through my job, and the guy i called is one of their lighting specialist staff here in Norway. I said i was installing lights in a new greenhouse, and the customer had heard of the new CMH bulbs, and was wondering which he should buy.. I don't know if he recommended the Greenpowers just because they have higher profit margins on them and it's a proven bulb for greenhouse production, but it's very possible. I also don't think they have researched the effects of light spectrum on plant resin production, but they probably will once cannabis is legal somewhere they operate :)
