Ceramic Metal Halide (CMH)

2 of my CMH bulbs just blew out at the same time....I think my circuit was overloaded from a dehumidifier and the bulbs couldn't take it. Is this a common occurrence?

That is beyond odd..
when the lamps whent out did it blow a breaker if so how long after did u try to fire lamps (they need 5-15min to cool before re striking)
Have ya checked the fuse to the ballasts..?

does both lamps appear to be good or do the arc tubes look black etc.?
have u tried to fire up another lamp style..

i never heard of CMH dying from just an overload, (could blow lamps if overload is daily assurance< like brownouts)

depending where u bought u always have warranty to fall back on..

i'm on 21 days of CMH light and
they are growing very slowwww.
not sure if I like that
i'll givem 21 more days to show some more plant yield.

It could be the strain or some other factor? I got some blue mystic's that are on day 44 of flower under a 400w cmh, and they seem to be growing at a normal rate.

I would hope a tasty one. And that is what it has given me each and every grow with it. (shrug)
I don't weigh weed, so I can't say for certain what any given plants harvest actually is. But, I am a pretty good guestimator. But as good as I am, I hate to even start on the yield per watt thing. Way too many variables involved for intelligent answers to be given. And even then it is all going to be relevant to strain and/or situation, as Seismic pointed out.

Look, the numbers are in on the light. They work, and work well. Past that it's only a jack-off session, similar to "what reflector should I get...what light numbers are you guys getting?" That is personal choice stuff...and really rather boring, if I can be honest.

I have to produce volume for patients.
I got 700 grams from a 1k hortilux.
I'd have to get a similar amount or more from 2-3 CMH 400's
or the CMH won't work out for me.

well asking anybody here CAN'T give you a specific answer, as we're not growing the same thing you are. you need to run that 700g strain under 2 CMH's and then compare notes. Let us know the results.

thanks Vorsprung

figure the light is only $50 and the ballast only $50.. that's $100 for an up-and-running CMH (assuming you have the hood already).

carbon filters cost more than that..LOL

I'll be trying CMH this run. Unfortunately the last was with T5's only so I can't compare to HPS..if the CMH works good i'll do a second, get it dialed in, then do the 3rd with HPS. I'll let you know in the Fall..haha..

I kept saying that too, Vorsprung...but I keep running the CMH. Goin on 5th grow with it now I think.
I keep a HPS for backup. Probably change out to a new CMH before I ever use it.

I'm looking at CMH for a box that I'm putting together, the bulbs really interest me. Not sure whether to go for 250 or 400. It's going to be a 2x3x3 box, end height probably about 30" inside, of useable space.

What would be the best reccomendation for that? I'm currently leaning towards the 250, but I will be using a tube to cool the light itself, so should be able to keep it reasonably cool inside. I'm not sure if the height is sufficient to allow a 400. Any input?

I used 600's for years. I forgot the lower power of the 400's
I used a 1k Horty for the 1st time now & it's nice and powerful.
I had a 1K MH
many years ago. I think the higher power suits my nature
for lots of lushy growth trying for the outside levels.
thanks

I'm sure this has been answered but... Where are you guys getting the CMH's nowadays? I'm aware you can buy online but is there anywhere I could look locally? I don't think the hydro shops here sell them. I'm lookin for a 400 watt.

Not many shops are going to have them, though one of the big wholesalers just added CMH to their lineup, so maybe someday soon.

For now you pretty much have to mailorder them.

For anyone interested... This is northen lights and chronic growing under a 400w CMH, and yes these plants are 6" or less from the bulb, and one plant is growing up into the hood... obviously my hood is vented and I have good circulation, but I think you'd have a hard time doing this with a MH or HPS bulb.

And, the last photos are of my ladies budding under a 400w CMH and 400w HPS, I like it so far..... DANK! :joint:

I have a question for all those experienced in CMH growing: I am looking to upgrade to a new bulb and would like to go with the CMH. I currently use a 430W HPS, with a 430W ballast, for flowering.

Can I use a 400watt CMH in my current 430W ballast (it's not digital)?

Thanks
