couldnt you just copy the DIY carbon scrubber thread only with smaller sizes? you could use different sized cans like a coffee can or what not. get creative...youd be suprised how many useful things there are around the house if you just spend a little time with them.

later
good luck

Just not possible I'd say... the cfms provided by that fan aren't near enough to pull through a carbon scrubber, even if it were the size of maybe a small pill bottle I couldn't see it eing very feasible.

Something I have thought about is getting a reg pc fan filter and put a thin layer of carbon on the inside. In my case though I will prob have four fans, so two will have the filters w/carbon, 2 without.

darrinjefferson: i was thinking of using a pop can but im not really sure how to attatch it to the fan

animosity2k1: what if i had a fan rated at 50 cfm, would it be possible?

XFieldofDreamsX: i also thought of doing the thin layer of carbon idea, i seen it on a thread on overgrow, he/she put some activated carbon in fabric softener sheets but i never found out if that worked for him/her.

filed of dreams- i know what your talking about. i have actually seen on a hydro site they sell pc fan filters.

take the fan, measure it. build a little box out of wood. put screening on both sides to hold the carbon in. then connect it to the fan. it should line up perfect since its the same size. then you can tape it on and there ya go. filter for your pc fan.

hope this help ya open chron

anyone know if those scrubbers are any good? i always thought pc fans had far too lower cfm to move enough air through the carbon.

i grow in a wardrobe type space, so its not like i need to move alot of air.

Don't listen to "nay-sayers" they are easily made for just a couple of bucks and work fine. I've been using them for years. The issue is, because the fan is of limited power, you must present a larger area for it to draw through. Here's an easy solution.......

Take two small plastic net baskets, like the kind blueberries come in. They should be perferated on all sides and the bottom. The less plastic and the more open space the better. Next cut a piece of carbon impregnated filter material large enough to sandwich between them when they are fully nested. You can buy the material at any Home DePot or Lowes. Just follow the provided link to see what I'm referring to. Next, jut run a strip of 1/2 inch foam weather proofing tape along the bottom edge where you trimmed off the filter. Now simply hang the new scrubber inside your cabinet right over the fan. The fan will now draw all of its air thru the filter while at the same time suck the filter against the wall and prevent any leaks around it.

Here's the link....

For some other ideas for box growing check out the link in my signature and also the "150w HPS Club" thread.

Best of luck & Grow Safe.

PipeDream is on the right track, the way I think of it. You have a weak fan, so think of a carbon sandwich, the important thing is that the air pulls through the filter. On P's design above, I would use 2 pieces of the carbon material [yes, this is good material for diy], and sprinkle a thin layer of activated carbon between my layers. It is only fair for me too tell you to think of upgrading your fan size, you can make the pc fans work I reckon, but more power would let you use thicker layer of carbon.

thank you all for your ideas, i know i should have a stronger fan but it is a very small grow just 2-3 plants tops, just need a carbon filter because i want to keep it on the low just in case people are over. i think ill try the sandwich idea by pipedream and field of dreams. but if any one else have any other ideas im sure it might help others as well!!!

I'm going to be using PC fans for my grow, doing a carbon filter design like Red Greenery's. I do have a question though...
* Fan Size: 120 x 120 x 38mm
* Airflow – 86.5cfm
* Noise – 35.5dba
* Static Pressure - 4.80 mm-H20
* Rotation Speed - 2100 RPM
* Connector - tailed w/ 3 pin connector (no rpm sensoring).
* Bearing Type - Hydro Wave
* Power Consumption - 4.08 watt
* Current Draw - 0.45 amp
* Rated Voltage – 12 Volt
* Operating Voltage - 7 ~ 13.8 Volt
* Panaflow Part Number: FBA12G12M

Can I hook that up to any 12v DC converter, that can handle the current draw, or do I need to get something more exact? Could I hook up more than one to a single plug? I'm going to need either two or three, one or two for the filter(s) and one for a vented hood.

Anything close to 12V will do. Its not critical. Like you say, any 12V converter that can handle the current draw.

If you are using to or three, just add up the current requirements, in this case .45 amps. Two of them would .9 amps, three 1.35 amps. But I get the feeling you know that. Other readers may not. :confused:

Once you know your current requirements, if you need a power supply go to your local radio shack. Get a 12V power supply that will deliver the current you require. If it is rated to deliver more current, that's OK. It will only deliver what the fan will draw, "Current Draw - 0.45 amp" each.

I hope my ranting helped somebody.
