carbon filter size?

Im starting to gather my materials for my first grow. Im currently in an apartment so being able to reduce smell is important. I plan on picking up a carbon filter. Since I will be doing a micro grow for my first grow I figure a 4'' filter will be just fine however I am thinking long term for when I buy a house (2-4 years) which will house a larger grow hopefully a 4' by 4', 8-12 plants. With this in mind would it be better to get the 6 inch filter off the get go or could I get by with the 4 inch for the 4' by 4' space? Money is an issue but would rather get one filter and be set both ways. Thanks in advance!!

I would buy the 4" filter..or make a small carbon filter. As the fellow above said, plans on here for making them.

The reason is, the larger the filter, the more blower power you need to draw air through it. If you are doing a micro grow, do you really want a BIG blower?

Make/buy use the largest filter you can. This is your going to jail prevention card. Good filtering is much cheaper than long term therapy from hanging out with the tossed salad man. The slower the air passes over the carbon the better the smell is removed. Stay safe, be smart, tell NO ONE!

Ok thanks for the reply folks! I will look around and maybe try to build my own filter.
MTweedman- I didnt even think of the added power needed to draw air through the filter, good call. I dont want a big blower however am trying to think of my situation down the road when I finally buy a house and move from micro to a larger grow. I would hate to spend the money on a 4'' when I might need a 6'' in a few years.

What is your defination of micro? What size area? What kind of light? There is alot more that goes into it. You are talking your safety. Especially in an apartment. It's nice to think years down the line but safety is here and now. As is your current lack of funds. So set up as best you can now with safety in mind.
What sort of fan are you getting?

Bullshit! You can always use a smaller blower on a larger filter. In fact, it will work better.

Old Fool- micro grow size will be a dresser converted 2-3' wide, 2-3' deep, 4-6' tall. hopefully 3-4 plants, still need to find the right dresser but Im getting close. Light wise 250 mh and hps, thought about a 400hps but worried about the heat. Down the line I want to upgrade to a 600 for flower and plan to use the 250 for veg and mothers . Funds wise I can afford the 6 inch filter but would like to save some money for more seeds, htg has a combo fan/filter. With this in mind Ill likely get the 6 inch filter with 270 cfm fan, the 4 inch has a 210 cfm fan. From my understanding the filters can be refilled which takes about a year, correct?

I had my say.

If you believe that, more power to you...and good luck with your odor control.

Sorry I was so harsh MT.
The longer the air stays in contact with the carbon the better it will scrub. Obviously if the filter is large and therefore has a high surface area and the blower is small therefore moves a small amount of air, that air will stay in contact for a much longer time frame.
