Canon MPE 65mm Macro Images

Amazing pics, Doob. I am especially impressed by the relatively wide range that you are able to keep in focus. On the microscopy camera I use you can almost never get as broad a focal point as the human eye sees, but you have nailed it.

Plasto many thanks..I'm learning it man!
Today this is Doobie's Strawberry, you'll find many of the strains are hard to tell from one another when looking at macros. They're very similar under close inspection. All for now..DD

Doobie, you rule! Do you do any focus stacking, or just shoot with a very small aperture?
Rousk I've tried stacking with poor results due to my improper set up..didn't have the right tripod for it. Aprature..I'm all over the place with it..thanks for asking...

WasntMe hey buddy, I'm about ready to try this-though I might need your help. I have downloaded the firmware but have not installed it. I found these two videos explaing the technique:
Focus stacking video for magic lantern http://vimeo.com/5879032
Focus stacking with Magic lantern youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfHVlxiWYKk
But it will be a week or two before I can get to working with it. I'm pretty sure one of my Canon lenses will work with it. And I'm pretty sure it will do wonders for my macros..thanks and Peace..DD

Yeah, I hope you find it useful ... I'm pretty sure you will when you start playing with it.
My uncle uses "ML" on his Canon DSLR for the upgraded video shooting features. Like CHDK, I like the fact that the firmware runs off the card it's not installed on the camera, so no warranty issues nor "no turning back" situations. They really expanded on the foundation work that everyone did with CHDK and seem to have made ML easier to use/install and more robust, obviously since it's for the DSLRs. There are a lot of instructional vids out there .....
Installing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMDD56RhStw&feature=related
Would love love to see someone with actual photography talent, like yourself, do some real work with these tools.... good luck.
Yeah, anything I can help with.... just ask.

Anyways, so as not to Jack your thread ...

That Tom Hill X18 has a very interesting Tric structure pattern. Also, seeing the reflections in the in the clear heads is sort of captivating. Great Shots.

DD,

Your pics are awesome as usual but I have to ask about harvest time. I see very few amber trichs in your photos. Do you harvest on day count or when you visually see what makes you happy?

Not saying one or the other is right, I'm just curious.

I typically wait until I see a good amount (20-50% (depending on the strain)) of amber trichs until I harvest and I'm not fully convinced this is the way to gauge ripeness for all strains.

What do you think? You've grown a shitload of different genetics and it seems your usage is mostly medicinal so I'd love to hear your thoughts on this. If you want to respond via PM, that would be fine I don't want to derail this fine thread of macro porn you have going here :tiphat:

DP many thanks for asking and possibly we'll get some input on this. Very rarely do I see more than 10% amber. Amber just ain't in my cards. I just don't get it no matter how long I let the girls go. I've let plants go a month past maturity, until they're shrivling and dying, and I still don't get amber.
I've asked our Pros a couple years ago but never did get much of an explanation, perplexed am I to say the least.

These pix of my Cripple Creek were shot last fall, weeks after harvest of the main plant. I let this branch go as I was looking to mature some seed that never happened. October 27th, we had overnights at 22 degrees, all my grow, even the Sativas, had been harvested weeks earlier.

You can see the maturity in the buds and pistles, just cloudy trichs, not much amber...most of the popcorn buds I left were purple by then. If you'll look at the stage of maturity that ^ ^ X18 bud is in above..still not much amber.

...Cripple Creek...DD

Very interesting input guys.

DD mostly what I've grown until this year were predominantly Indica strains and between 60 and 70 days is when I see the trichs going amber. It definitely gives the smoke that stoned couchlock effect.

I am harvesting my first predominantly Sativa strains this month (Trainwreck and Durban Poison) and even though they have gone 60+ days, I don't see much amber at all and not many cloudy trichs either.

The wildcard in all this is that I grow outdoors and in the past years I have witnessed the difference in my Indica strains and how they look and smell depending on what time of the year I harvest them.

Clones from the same mother look, taste and smell differently if they are harvested in November vs March. Maybe it's the angle of the sun, days getting longer etc, but in some instances the plants (again, clones from the same mum) look drastically different in flower depending on the time of the year.

I've seen it often enough now that I'm going to try to capture the differences in pictures next year and if I do, I'll start a thread to show everyone.

Nice, DD! You've almost tempted me to get out my new rig and do some shooting. :) Recently picked up the D7000... haven't shot any buds with it yet... but I'm sure it'll be fun to strap on my 60mm and see what transpires! Lovely shots, man. I love resin globules close up. :) cc
