Cannabis Oil from Stems

This is not very new idea. I use cleaned sand to intensify ethanol washing like i did stone-washed jeans 25 years back.

Usually every 6 months I take all my stems and roaches and make oil. I generally use butane extraction and do seperate dishes for each. I find with every 1 oz of stems I use I can pull about 1 to 2 g of pretty good honey oil out of it. I take all stems grind up and good as possible in a coffee grinder. Take powder and strings and whatever comes out of grinder and just do a regular extraction. It usually comes out kinda golden yellow on the pan and once scraped is more of a lighter brown.

I don't mix roaches and oil because the product isn't really the same (roaches generally make a runny oil that does not solid up well even after freezer) but the effects are the same.

I have been making ISO with stems since 1992 when an old hippie taught the process to the new kid next door.(ME)

Its not the same as some buds or nice trim but why let it go to waste.

I usually save the stems up for months and mix them in with some trim when I do a wash.

I have done only stem washes but it is something I do mostly during desperate times with no better medicine available. I dont find the stems alone work as well on my severe back pain from a broken back and of course the high is not as good.

We have found out that a hammer mill (used for crushing corn etc.) works well for getting the stem material and fiber material knocked down to a manageable size. Multiple passes are going to be the next test. The finer the grind, the better the return.

The fiber and ground material can be used for so many things! I am looking forward to making a cannabis loofa... Or some cannabis soap. Paper is going to be fun to make as well.

I am also wanting to play with other solvents to see what the differences are. As GW pointed out, not all solvents are created equal! A methanol extraction is in the works...

Extractions just get me all giddy inside! Err... Wait, it might be the latest concoction GW has come up with! Ah ha ha ha!

Hello GG!

As GG noted, our much anticipated Romanian hammer mill arrived and works well at turning the chips from the McCulloh garden chipper shredder into a finely divided material suitable for column extraction.

Besides the meds from the stem material, there is a ton of super soft fiber produced by pounding the living shit out of stem material with a hammer mill, which our wayward geeky Skunk Pharm associates are having way too much fun playing with.

We ran a dozen or so butane columns averaging approximately 72 grams each, and I have samples currently processing in hexane and ethanol for further conventional separation experiments today. As GG noted, we are building a methanol column as well, in combination with our longer term fractional separation experiments.

Included in today's experiment, will be stripping the exterior of a batch of stems using QWISO, with the addition of sand as suggested by J117, followed by drying and pulverizing the remains and doing a column strip. The purpose of that experiment is to identify exactly which of the oils and resins comes from the trichomes and which come from the balance of the plant material itself.

Preliminary tests of Saturday’s extracted oils showed them to be high in pain relieving properties when smoked, with little head effect. Interestingly it is also relative cough free compared to bud or leaf oil, with a pleasant unique flavor of its own.

In my own case, that test followed a previous test with high THC levels, which left me bruxing. Interestingly the stem oil stopped the bruxing and left me feeling quietly relaxed, though not couch locked, so it appears to also contain a THC antagonist.

I turned 4 grams of the extract into a version of HAO topical, which is currently out for further testing, but which personal preliminary testing and one patient test, shows to work as well or better than my standard HAO topical from leaf for pain relief.

More as this experiment progresses.

My seat is pulled up! its amazing to me there are so many smart polite people on this site who are willing to commit time for everyones benefit. I can't wait to try some of these methods.
May ask about some of the chemical reagents? Where do you think is the best place to obtain from (within the US)

Have you thought about Cannalytics for testing?

Thanks for taking the time to document your experiments for the online community

Keep up the good work Sir
