Cannabis grafting

Hi!

Here is an update of experiment 3 (insertion of a scion in an vertical incision performed in the internode section of the stem - see post 100, 101, 103 and 113 for details)

The two auxiliary buds present on the scion grew perfectly healthy to about 10 inch length to reach the canopy of the plant. The evolution is quite impressive, the plant didn't seem to be stress at all about this procedure.

Here is some picture of the initial grafting procedure and the final result:

Scion selection and preparation:

Scion insertion:

Plant after wrapping:

And NOW (new growth of the scion in the red box):

Here an update on the traditionnal V-Graft: Experience No 1, see post 83 to 86, 103 and 146) The plant is growing normally and the scions are growing healthy!

Tried another wedge graft today. Lets hope it takes.

Last veneer graft almost fully healed. Have to wrap it for another week or so and it should be fine.

Great thread, I love grafted Cannabis.
I don't know if they will ever become popular as a way to have a big library maintained, or as a way to produce Cannabis of more then 6 varieties at a time with just 6 plants? 3 veging and 3 flowering in Calif. allows you to have 10-20 grafts of different varieties on each plant, some in veg some flowering.
Thanks for the work from all to show how easy this can be.
Remember if you plant to flower a grafted plant use the latest flowering female as the rootstock and consider grafting the scions with earliest varieties to upper branches same with male scions. That helps keep the rootstock alive until all scions have finished flowering.
What is the most grafts of different varieties on to a single plant? I did many with 10 and some grafts with both male and female scions but never did 20 different on one plant. I did work with big plants in the ground in a greenhouse, that makes it easier to have many grafts on a single plant. I am sure I could do 100 on a very large plant, I grew them 10+ foot and used them both to flower and as mothers for clones.

I want 5 multi grafted plants. Two for moms, one to flower for fun and a couple for friends. I'm going to just keep putting scions on this one plant as it grows. If one variety takes...I'll work on another. Low plant count and several clones.

A crazy ass flowering plant with different color, frost level and size on the buds would look cool too. A Weed Salad Tree.

Hey guys, can I join the party?

First attempt for me. If one out of 6 takes I'll think of it as a huge success.

I had these stretchy seedlings that I'm mostly holding on to for genetic potential. I tried various cuts, but mostly side grafts. I rapped it in plastic food wrap and where needed added some HPHT. I also tried one with just HPHT and one with just electrical tape.

Also did another veneer graft.

Nice step by step pics BombBudPuffa! You got the right technique. I'm 100% sure this will be a success. Nice work my friend! :tiphat:

I would like to try a 25+ grafts on a single main lined plant. That way, I could keep every selected phenotype of my current breeding projet (BikerKush X (Gorilla glue 4 x (GSC furum cut X Arcata Train Wreck))) on a single plant. I may be working on this in a near futur!

Thanks! That's my goal...Less plants but still lots of variety. Thanks for the inspiration!

Here is an update on Experiment No6: Side graft.

Here in what it looked at day 0 (see post 119, 120 for details):

And now:

Earlier in the day I took microscopic pics of the grafting site of all my previous experiments but I lost them all in the editing process... I'll take some in a near futur to show you guys...

The scions form the Cannabis-Potato graft experiment (Experiment No 5) are still healthy. The next days will be critical since I'll move the plant to the acclimatation zone... I'll keep you updated...

Do it, I know you can, and several pictures of the different grafted branches when flowered would be great. The differences in flowering times is interesting for photos as well as NLD and WLD both flowering on the same plant would be very nice, not to mention males.... And a use many could take advantage of is to keep plant counts below 6 but have dozens of varieties.
Males can be bagged with pollen bags, at the end before pollen drop to collect pollen and avoid accidental seeds where not wanted.
How long before you can buy grafted smaller clones at dispensaries? Interesting times we live in.

Hi Sam,
It would be an interesting idea, I have different strain that I could graft on a single main lined plant. I have about 10 different strain I could graft on a single plant: Just to name few – Biker Kush, Blue Dream, Sour Diesel, Swazi gold pure african sativa, and my current breeding project: Fast flowering purple pheno (Biker Kush X (original OG Kush “Crippy” X Grandaddy Purple)), (Biker Kush x (Bubba Gift X OG/Afgan)), and (Biker Kush X (GSC forum cut X Arcata TrainWreck))… That would be an interesting project. Full of colours! I’m planning to give it a try but to be honest, I’m more into biotech project at this point (However, getting a licence for scientific purpose is pretty complicated were I’m from)

Grafted clones is certainly something that clone seller should look into, especially in plant count area in the USA. The grafting process could be done at the same time as the cloning procedure…

And now for everyone interested in grafting, let’s try a other experiment: Experiment X (I lost count) : Grafting 7 scions on a rootstock in a single step:

Ok let start saying that I’m not satisfied with the transversal V-cut I made at the tip of the main branch. I should have leave at least one inch above the actual cut so It would have been so much easier to proceed with the top grafting. Also, I’ll say that I’m usually not working with apical buds as a scion so will see what will be the end result…

So this is how I processed:

I selected a rootstock that was going to be discarded from the growing area:

Cut the trunk at the base, but I made sure to leave 2 small branches to support the healing process:

I selected 7 different scions from different plant material:

I removed all excess plant material on the scions, leaving only the apical bud:

I don't know why but the site don't allow me to upload the 5 remaining pictures of the whole process....

On the 7 graft, 3 would be side graft on the trunk and the remaining 4 would be for transversal V-cut graft on the top:

Making the first 3 side graft cuts on the rootstock:

Inserting the 3 scions for the side grafts:

Then with the 4 additionnas grafts:

Maybe make several (7) scions with 7 each different varieties then when they take you can graft all the scions onto a larger single different scion? 7X7 plus the big scion would be 50 on one plant.
I hope this is done for folks to see.
