It is a pot. It is Fabric. It allows more oxygen
Flow. More water evaporates thru it so they use a little more water. The air stops the roots from growing thru the fabric.

Wrapping them in plastic makes no sense to Me. May as well use standard plastic nursery pots.

I use them. I like them very much.
Not as easy to repot into bigger size as a regular plastic pot. Not a big deal though.

I've used plastic containers for years and then switched to the same size in Smart Pots. The yeild went up a lot! So did the frequency of watering too. :biglaugh: I have stopped using smart pots due to I can't wash them after every use. And would get expensive using a new one on every plant.

I've since switched to these containers called Rootmakers. Supposedly they are by the same guy who invented the Smart Pot and they are awesome! You kinda get the best of both worlds....plastic and root pruning. They have holes along the sides with groves inside the container that directs to roots to the holes so they get air pruned. And watering frequency is the same as smart pots. I would highly recommend to anyone who likes what the smart pot does, but find them a little inconvenient.

Thanks for your advice / opinions :)

I think this occasion I will use smart pot (the manufacturer indicates that can wash, after using it). I will tell you my experience in a new post (indoor grow diary).

Dead on analysis......as I have had very similar experiences with 'fabric' pots.
My roots increased due to the oxygen getting to the roots....engulfing the container.....awesome terpene production.

Hey Vanilla I was just wondering why do you insist on washing the smart pot after every use? Does anybody their wash smart pots after every harvest? I sure don't and I don't really see the point, I mean it's just a mix of peat, coco, perlite, sand, humus, vermicompost etc. which I would wash away only to replace it with the same thing...luckily I don't bother, so lazy, just use same soil again and again.

I switched from 10l plastic pots to 26l smart pots gradually over the last couple of years.
I like smart pots because imo it makes it harder to overwater a plant. It's more forgiving but does use more water. I like how they are not as rigid as a plastic pot so you can squash them into tight spaces. I like how you can stick them in/on the ground (for the outdoor season) and the roots will grow through the fabric. I like the handles. I like how the 26l size is big enough so than you can have a no till living soil yet it is small enough to move around if need be. I just like them better than plastic pots.

I guess you really dont have to wash them. I still like the ease of plastic pots. But if i was using a 26l container size like you, smart pots are the best way to go, imo. No way would a plastic container that size dry out as fast as a fabric one.

Well, it is nice to be sure there are no possible little friends is all.

It's somewhat overkill, especially if you don't have any bug issues.

I eventually had some sort of Gnat issues in Coco.

I wipe out my grow box and disinfect it between grows now.

Just habit.

You wash any salts or residual nutrient build up out of the fabric from my experience.
