Can sex be identified at this stage?

Hi ppl, I have a plant that's been vegging for about 2 months now ( about 20 cm or 8 inches tall), and I think that it's showing first signs of sex, but I ain't sure, I am a noob, could you please help me with this, or is it too early to determine?

thanks in advance

p.s. is there a thread where you could post pics of plants if you need help determining the sex? to start a new thread each time you need help....... not a good idea

The female preflower is pear shaped and produces a pair of pistils. Frequently, the female preflowers do not show pistils until well after the preflowers have emerged. Thus, don't yank a plant because it has no pistils. Pistillate preflowers are located at the node between the stipule and emerging branch.

Also, some female preflowers never produce pistils. A female preflower without pistils is difficult to distinguish from a male preflower. Thus, hermaphodite issues should not be resolved by the appearance of preflowers without pistils, on a plant otherwise believed to be a female. .

Here is a male preflower

Hope that helps. Got white hairs???

The best thing you can do for yourself to determine sex by preflower is get a good magnifying glass, its a rare instance when I cant tell the sex of a seedplant by weeks 4-5 using a magnifying glass.Note many determine sex by pistil or pollen sac, thats not true preflowering identification it can be done a week sooner by learning the different structure/texture of the two "nodules"

A pocket scope is very nice to have for various reasons throughout the grow. A good one can be purchased at Radio Shack or a Discovery Channel store in a mall--

Many new growers have a hard time just differentiating between what has hairs and what doesn't. Many determine sex by pistil or pollen sac because it is the easiest and most foolproof way.

Well I have a 8X magglass, just inspected the plant, looks like a female but... maybe too early to tell... Here are some bigger pics... damn I need to get a digicam, taking closeup pics with a web cam is a pain in the ass

I thought that I saw some pollen sacks, but at closer look with the maggalls turned out to be false

Here's a closeup of my only sativa (btw bagseed) mex plant. A Girl 4 sure, she grows so fast, barely fits under the table, gotta transplant her outdoor asap

What reputation lol?Thats an optical delusion,I call unfairziez..When I look at the middle pic of the first set you posted with reading glasses,I can still clearly see the teardrop and protruding pistil. When you blow it up its not a preflower at all, just another boring node..

I agree with farmer, it's to early, you have to change the light timing to be able to tell for sure. IMO there kinda small plants as well, these are six weeks in veg

I do not know why they say "It is best to sort them at preflower".
I let them all go and just pull males as they show. It is much easier to determine a male than a female, imo. So as I go I just pull them. You have a long time from the point that a male shows itself to the point that there is pollen. And lately I have been taking the males out and putting them in my bathroom under a skylight so that I can collect the pollen. May as well sacrefice a single bud or two to get some of your own seeds eh.

If you have the space to let them grow you should determine most by 8 weeks still in 24h light.

Out of 50 seeds I planted 10 weeks ago, 4 still have not shown. I took cuts off them and will force the clones to show.

Cool that you mentioned this. I wanted a safe method to get seeds without having to pollinate the girls

How do you collect the pollen?
How do you store it?
How long can it be stored?

Have you already gotten seeds (with your method) that grew into plants?

Well I totally messed up in the first 3 weeks. During the first week I just kept them on the window sill. For the next 2 weeks the plants were under wrong lights (2700K) with the wrong timing 14/10, in small pots and did not feed them nutes. Now I've got fruit flies, tryin' to get rid of them with garlic juice and fly strips.

p.s. the 8 inch plant is not 2 month old actually. The ones that I did start 2 month ago are a bit over a foot tall now

Watch out...they're mean when they're drunk!! :biglaugh:
My boy was allowed to finish up with a couple of CFL's, in a seperate area from the females. I simpy waited until the plant dropped pollen, then I would shake it off the leaves , into a plastic container. I then removed a girl from my grow area and took her to another location of the house to pollinate. I used a tiny paintbrush(or you can use a cotton swab or make-up brush). Take the brush and slide the tip around in your container full of pollen. Then, gently "paint" it on the budsite you have chosen to pollinate. I choose to do this at the beginning of a "lights on" cycle. That way it has the day to take hold and she is kept out of any breeze. I have a few CFL's lying around extra for this purpose. I was successful at pollinating the specific locations, without pollinating anything else. Good luck to you.

I have some experience 'micro' sexing and 90% of these looking pics tend to be males. [ a closer more focused picture would help alot though. ]

The difference with them is the real early male formations look like a very small but very round dingleballs [ like the one pictured.] The early female ones usually retain their teardrop shape and once the plant is around 8-10 nodes or so you can pull back one of those grass blade looking things between the mainstalk and the base of the branches and you'll find the earliest startings of hairs emerging from the tip of the teardrop shaped calyx. Some hairs Ive found were only 1-2mm long and only showed themselves when they glinted in the light at just the right angles.
