can 2k hps be seen by a helicopter indoor in a tent?

I have a legal grow but still keep my setup as private as I possibly can. I was curious about FLIR and what could be detected a few months ago so I set my Pentax digital camera to night mode and went outside at night for a look. My room is at ground level and has only 1 window that is insulated and boarded off and I exhaust out a chimney so I figured that I was pretty safe.

I was pretty surprised to see how much heat and IR is escaping through the walls and roof so I sheeted the entire room w/2" styrofoam sheets.
Another thing I done that made even more difference was to set my 1k lights to turn OFF during the night when temperatures are lowest.

It is impossible for FLIR to work during daylight since it detects heat and Infrared deviations against a colder background, so turning your lights off at night during the 12/12 flowering cycle will give you complete security against FLIR.

Many cameras sold now offer night vision or an infrared projector which is reflected back and then detected by the camera aperture to take a picture. FLIR doesn't project IR but the detector works the same as night vision or night cameras except that it is a different wave length and it also detects heat. But a camera w/night vision will tell you if you are unknowingly advertising your grow. If you can detect IR escaping w/ a camera then you can bet that LEO can detect it from miles away w/ FLIR.

IR guns can't see inside ur walls, just see differences in temps of the outside of your house, like a temp laser gun, but they get an image. if one room is 90 degrees and the rest of ur house colder, the windows will show a heat signature as well as any hot exhausts... they look for glowing rooms LOL

If you are in doubt, buy yourself a FLIR gun and check it out yourself. You can rent them from flir.com also from what I have been told and then you don't have to wonder.

Yes the heat of the bulb gives you away that why I'm waiting on a court date and looking at 5-15 years.

I have a Grow Lab and a Secret Jardin, I love them both, very nice, mine are 4x4, I wish I had a 5x10, thats where its at! AND, 75 degree temps with lights on using 2K, even nicer....You are sure to get fat dense buds with that set up.

No I wasn't growing in a tent. But flir can spot a man behind a wall just by his body heat. How hard do you think it is for the same system to see your lights burning brightly.

FLIR cannot see a man behind a wall because of his body heat. It can only see the surface temperature of the walls or heat coming out of an exhaust. You'd have to be Johnny fuckin' Storm for a FLIR camera to spot you from behind a wall.

Further it doesn't sound like you really know how the cops discovered your setup to begin with. Why go around saying it was because of heat?

Also, how are you charged with growing if you took down the grow before they arrived? Sounds like the only one who should be in trouble is your partner/friend who got pulled over with the small amount of weed?

Not trying to play Sherlock Holmes with your story, but you're spreading bad info and playing the devils advocate about getting popped with 2K worth of light thanks to FLIR, so I'd like to really get some details on why you feel so sure it is to blame for your bust.

flir cannot spot a man behind a wall..only heat sigs outside the house..btw there are more sytsems than just flir..that can get u cracked..

People growing in newer IR blocking tents rarely ever get popped for heat sig's and if they do it's for some other reason usually a snitch or domestic dispute that causes exposure of the grow. There are some very powerful FLIR cameras today and some very well can see the glowing heat signature of HID bulbs through some structures there are plenty of pictures of it online just google it if you want to scare the shit out of yourself.

Nothing on that page that backs up what you say at all. Only people they show being spotted with their gear are outside.

Frankly, the only one who sounds crazy here is you - fearmongering about FLIR like its freakin' x-ray glasses or something.

Well there are alot of reasons why they use FLIR to detect indoor grows, one of them being that it actually works. Also IR detection has come a long way in recent years, you would really be suprised how invasive this technology has become. Most barrier objects like walls for instance or ceilings absorb IR heat in a tell-tale pattern in grow rooms and it sticks out like a sore thumb to high sensitivity IR cameras. Growing in a IR blocking tent and air conditioning the surrounding airspace effectively making a room inside another room is one surefire way to avoid FLIR detection. A non shielded room full of HPS lights (even with air exchange) is going to appear as a bright lit up hotspot to a FLIR camera on a copter because walls of the space are absorbing all the radiant IR energy the whole time lights are on.

I think (eventually) what i'm going to do is the windows that are exposed at street view i'm going to use cardboard (as an initial light barrier) with this thermal shield stuff and that should protect my windows from outside intrusive sources (FLIR, etc)...aside from that it comes down to maintaining temperatures when you use tents...
