O

so
rumor has it in town that these new white boxes that keep appearing on the light poles are security cameras. I highly doubted it at first but there is a possibility.

sketchy white boxes with a big ass antenna coming out of it

anyone confirm what this is?

I don't think those are cameras, tho they do put them on poles, mostly in high crime areas--
I believe those are some kind of boxes that help them troubleshoot and locate a prob in their lines-- (I have seen those white boxes out in the desert...where there is nothing to watch)
Most cameras you see on the street tho, are mostly used for traffic...and a lot of them are only radar...for the live traffic update sites--
But keep in mind, no matter what a cameras intended purpose, LEO can subpoena footage from any of them--

That does not look like a camera, it looks like some kinda of access point for transferring wireless signals. Or it could be something like kmk420kali said. They have cameras around here at almost every major intersection, mostly for like accidents and such.

I would understand the traffic monitor idea but this is a local where I see maybe 30 cars a day. not high traffic , not a stoplight in sight. I'm still not sure what to think but Ill go take a better picture

after further examination this does not seem to be a camera but i would still like to find out what these are

Only thing I can think of some type of information system for the lights? Not sure what great purpose that would serve? Perhaps they can remotely determine if the light is out?

Interested to know what that is after seeing it closer! :p Definitely something providing some kinda remote data or access for some purpose, though it would appear.

Hrmph.

Should have looked closer at YOUR pic. Yeah, those aren't cameras. Someone I knew who worked at Delphi told me once that they were used in some sort of traffic monitoring system, as someone mentioned above.

But they are using cameras in high crime areas.

I my old hood we had cameras on all directions of traffic and they also had something like this and I believe it is wireless access for LEO and fire dept and other county or city folks. In a not so far off future LEO will have a dash mounted cam that will search every car license plate that it drives by. I think England already is using it, but for it to be effective you will need a very good wireless network. Your papers please.

Yep, already being implemented in many places, it scans basically every license plate it can and returns data, i.e., stolen, or whatnot. Im not a huge fan of the dash mounted cameras scanning plates, though I know I have nothing to worry about as I have proper registration and insurance.. It still seems WRONG.

That is strange!!
At first glance they look very similar to the devices that the fire department uses to change traffic lights as they approach them. Very similar look but never on a lamp post like that one.

they look like the camera and gunshot detectors that chicago has been using but i would suspect those for being GPS devices for the city vehicles so they know where everyone is hiding

de-lurk. Similar thread was started on a Radio Scanner website.

Answer quoted here since the guy who answered had an FOP logo as his avatar - besides, I can't post URLs yet as far as I know. You can Google the text if you're looking for the whole thread/pics. Basically it sounds like a mesh network for municipal vehicles.

It is definitely WiFi. The company I work for has put up a number of these systems with boxes similar in nature to these. Our's are called MotoMesh. Our's has four elements and operates in two different bands. 802.11 and usually a 900 propietary for closed network application. One of the systems allows PD and FD units to monitor fixed camera locations, even using PTZ controls on cameras located throughout the city. The dispatch can also PTZ a camera to a given spot and units responding can view the cameras from their mobile laptops while enroute. Great for responding to traffic accidents or incidents (at the schools) where the cameras are located. It also works like a "hot spot" for internet connection, but allows the user to be mobile through the grids like cellular. The don't have to log back in each time they change locations. That works for passing data such as reports, bmv photos and info, city database info shared from the utilities, etc.

In my community (a big city with a big urban sprawl/suburban area around) they had microphones located in high crime areas (exact info about which telephone poles and which ones were real versus dummy microphones was kept secret obviously) that could detect a gunshot and use the data from all the speakers together to place the general area the shots were fired from and the general direction they were fired. They computer would automatically call officers to the scene....pretty cool....could be those? by the way my city is like top 10 or so for violent crimes and top 5 for homocide

so sounds like this is either a wifi connector or something of the sort. Is there a possibility that there is a camera nearby and this is simply the router for it???????

I need more input
this makes me uneasy

in the ghetto they have things that look similar to this but they are actually microphones. they listen for gunshots and then are able to tell the cops exactly where the gunshot came from. this one doesnt look like the typical ones ive seen so i dunno.
