Cameras - Info stuck to your pics

camera brand and model, not "your camera".

While many people own the same camera models, Pollitt believes that this technique can still be used forensically. He says that because digital cameras have a shelf life of only 18 months, this can help to narrow down when and where it was sold.

if cops are doing this to chase down growers, than we've got big, big problems at the core.

All one needs to do is crop or change a photo in any way (name) and it will remove any pertinent metadata, yes?

No, that's wrong, unless you have some image editor designed to do exactly that. As far as I know, the only way to remove that data is by deleting it with a program like Exifer. Renaming the file won't remove that data.

also note that vista has a tool to strip the images of exif data.

Properties > Details > Remove Properties and Personal Information ... then select the things you want to delete or just delete all...

just quoting my answer to a similar thread. hope it helps.

No, but you are the only person with a Cannon Rebel XT with embedded SN: #######!! Do you know if this SN is placed in the EXIF data? (I doubt it ..but maybe)

Now think about this...Did you fill out a warranty card when you purchased the camera?
Have you ever posted a picture anywhere on the www from this camera with information that could compromise your identity.
Not trying to freak you out.. but the possibility of LEO/others using this scenario is totally possible IMHO.

Better safe than sorry. Use a utility to wipe all EXIF data from your pics prior to posting.

The weed does make you paranoid.
I guess I better be hoping the facial recognition software is too important to waste on me.

Ofcourse I am sure they have easier ways of finding me. But in case I ever go into the CIA, this is good to know.

Not true. Read up on how many hackers have been caught. It may not be personally identifiable information but it instead of trying to find you out of 300 million Americans they can target you down the city the camera was sold in.

If you take a picture with an Iphone and don't delete the EXIF info the picture can be traced back the exact GPS coordinates the photo was taken. This could be a huge problem for someone that grows.

:yeahthats

There was a new member here that posted pics of his grow, the pics were hosted somewhere else. I saw he mentioned he was using an iPhone to take the pics and I had read about the GPS thing somewhere. I used http://regex.info/exif.cgi and it showed me his exact location. :badday:

I notified him and reported his post and the situation was taken care of pretty quickly. People asking about how to check EXIF stuff... just use that website I linked. It's easy as shit, and you don't have to download anything.

Here's an example. I just took this pic, dragged it off the memory card, and uploaded it to the site. When viewed like this, there is zero exif data. When I upload the picture from my PC to that EXIF viewer site, it shows tons of info. Nothing for me to worry about, just lots and lots of camera settings and stuff. On some cameras/phones, GPS can be included in the EXIF data. One some, it is on by default. Those are the ones to worry about. I know the iPhone is set to include GPS by default, unless something has changed.

EXIF data on a normal digital camera is fucking harmless.
Anyone using wi-fi,and uploading pics, directly, here, with an (un-cracked/un-jailbroken) iphone or other GPS-enabled phone like a crackberry storm, that's under a cellular provider service contract, with "location services" (GPS) turned on,is an idiot.
Want to upload pics with a camera phone?
Go buy a throw-away for $30,(ie. vodaphone pay-per-play/trac-phone,etc.) and register it using a public phone,if you must.
Idiots rule.... People who carry around pics of their grows on their phones,or in their cars are begging for It....
******* is doing a shit-pile of years because he took a High Times mag with pics of his yard full of weed to a party and played show n' tell....bless his heart....
I call these folks "cannon fodder",and they keep us who don't,safer,by tying up the court systems worldwide, making it easy to get hung by the nuts by carrying around felonious evidence.... Darwin would be proud.....

Back when the exif data standard was written there were very few gps enabled devices but there is room in the spec for that data. Resizing in photoshop removes this data. Resizing with the GD2 library (most likely used by Vbulletin) does not remove the exif data.

Even if the data is removed you are still far from safe. Every camera creates it's own video noise that's easily tracked back to the camera. This is like a spec of dust on your camera lens that denotes all pictures must be from the same camera. You might be able to change the noise by blurring and sharpening in photoshop, but in a criminal investigation simply removing exif data doesn't provide much safety at all.
