Since you can work from anywhere, I would stay far away from urban areas for multiple reasons.

I don't know if your in a urban area now but San Diego, LA (especially), San Fran, all these cities leave MUCH to be desired. There is terrible pollution, cost of living is some of the highest in the country, traffic is awful except between 2am and 4am, and for $1500 you will absolutely not get anything more then an apt.

If I were you (and I wish I was) I would pick somewhere removed from society where you can have a place near the ocean and still be able to land a house with a yard for a reasonable price. And don't forget slip prices. Marina Del Rey will cost you a pretty penny.

You mentioned Santa Monica, which is a nice area within god awful LA but for 1500 you won't be getting shit.

I strongly suggest you look outside the major areas.

Hit me up on PM if u have any questions. Very jealous of your situation, I'm a boater myself.

Santa Cruz, is great for weed. I went to school there, 4/20 is an annual city holiday basically. Lots of beach around there as well.

As for Socal, check out Venice. Pricey, but good weed community. Also Marina Del Rey.

Hey Everyone,

Looking at a possible move out there (Cali) early summer of 2011. So I need help narrowing my neighborhood to research based on my criteria below.
I'm just putting the feelers out there and trying to get opinions from anyone out in Cali about potential areas to move to.

My criteria:
1. within 15 to 20min drive tops to a Marina for my sailboat
2. Reasonable rental property costs compared to local cost of living
3. Can find rentals with backyard for a garden.
4. Relatively safe neighborhood
5. Hiking and camping fairly close by
6. Dog friendly. I have one small dog but want to get a lab too

I'm not so worried about job market as I can do my work remotely over the interwebz.
If you have any suggestions as to some areas that fit the above to research it would be much appreciated.

Thanks for any and all input

check out east oakland, its cheaper than regular oakland and you can still grow lots of bud. the areas between 70th and 90th street of E14th are the best areas. really cheap rent a 3bdroom for only 900 bucks a month. plus all the neighbors are really pot friendly and anti-police so they will be your friends.

Trying to be helpful or trying to get this newb shot?
You ever run plants in a backyard in east o? I didn't think so.
He's got a boat and a yappy dog, plus he wants to get a lab. Wrong guy for the town.

hey east oakland is very nice, you can purchase your crack, meth, or heroin from multiple places. the communities are very tight knit and welcoming. maybe you could join a motorcycle gang, or maybe just a regular gang like the Nortenos or Border Brothers. And dont worry guns are illegal in california so they arent carrying real ones, its probably just a BB gun so dont worry about it. and if they ask to "run your pockets" it means they wanna go down to the corner store for ice cream with you. just some local slang.

good luck! i found a house on 85th and plymouth street in east oakland, according to murdermaps there was only 4 homicides on that block instead of the dozen or so that happened in the 60s, so id venture to say its a golly safe place to call home!!

East Oakland really isn't that bad. However, this guy doesn't sound like the best match for the area.

So far I see the bay area, Santa Cruz, Sonoma, Emerald Triangle. Stay Nor Cal.

I live in Trinity county up right next door to humboldt, and there are some beautiful and affordable places up here. The ONLY criteria it couldnt meet would be being near the ocean, but there are many lakes throughout Trinity/Humboldt/Mendocino/Lake counties if you still wanted to be aquatic. There is plenty of room to grow, few people to bother you, and LEO is pretty cool. I'd recommend doing a little looking around the north coast if you are looking somewhere to grow and enjoy a somewhat peaceful existance (more than so cal anyway, take it from someone who has lived all over Cali).
Like others have said, if you wanna be near the ocean you're gonna have to pay for it, as well as be hard pressed to find a place to do a moderately-sized outdoor grow. However, if you can settle for boating on lakes, there are MANY options available that meet the rest of your criteria. Check out Lake County for proximity to water but slightly higher living costs, or Trinity or Humboldt County if you can drive an hour to go boating, but pay next to nothing for rent. I've got a 3 bedroom house on 14 acres and pay 400 a month in rent...thats less than I spend on groceries :)

damn 400 bucks a month thats a little lower than ive heard....usualy its around 700=800 for a manufactered home and you will be lucky to have a half acre. you got a good deal.

Yeah I admit I got a hell of a deal, its not really normal, but in my immediate area 1-2 bedroom houses on a decent sized lots are going for 500-800 a month which isnt bad no matter how you slice it. Not to mention most landlords are pretty much expecting you to grow anyway :)

If you decide on NorCal, check out inland Monterey Bay. I lived north of Salinas for a few years in Prunedale and had a 15 minute drive to the beach. I'm pretty sure there would be somewhere to keep a sailboat in Marina Ca, Castroville or Moss Landing.

Check out, (pardon the pun) the "Grass Valley" area North of Sac.

peace
doublejj

i used to do alot of business with grass valley natives...their community is kind of tight knit..if you werent born there or from there they dont take too kindly to transplants....just like most northern cali pot growing towns are seeing a huge influx in out of towners trying to cash in so many are bitter....they wont do anything violent but they will tell their buddies not to buy your wares, etc.....just my experiance..

Goodluck with santa cruz shit is too expensive there, everyone and their mother grows litterally, and theres no work at all!

Shit is flooded especially with fuckin blue dream! You should try San Leandro LOL
