Cabinet Transformation

Ahoy Mateys!

I'm turning this 7' long 18" high 13" wide cabinet into a veg cab/male pollen house!

Interior dimensions are small, 11" wide - 16" high. Plan on a 4 foot veg cab for clones and some veg time.

dunno how big the male portion will be, can't be sure till designs take place.

Before I even begin designing I need to know if this piece of wood is worth the effort.

I posted pictures of the cabinet and parts of it have these tiny, hard black dots on it, anyone have a clue what this is?

I also go this cool Floro set up from underneath the cabinet when it was hanging. Plan on using it for my veg cab lighting.

Only issue I have here is the ballast. It has the black gunk built up on it and theres a picture showing that as well. Ballast is the source, sadly got it on my hands thats how i noticed it was there.

Added specs and the bulbs that were in there.

Does anyone have a recommendation on good 4 foot bulbs for this thing? I could go to home depot and get new bulbs with a "blue" spectrum for the veg cab, at least thats the plan :)

Thanks so much, more to come soon!

That looks like mold. I thought mouse droppings 1st, but the lip on that cab isnt deep enough. Unless the top had an open space in the cieling. I cant really tell whats on the ballast.

I dont know, man. Once youve got your containers in there youre not going to have much space for vegging. It would make a killer clone/seedling cab.

Get the bright daylight bulbs with the highest K value you can find. Maybe a 2 footer with warmer lights for males in a section just for them? Just some brainstorming.

Its nice having some projects to focus on. Hows it going with the higher learning?

you just might be right WG.

I plan on taking away the two railing on the top and extending height, or i might cut it in half and then stack it, with one piece upside down.

So many options and since the closet is on stand still I will be working on the cabinet tomorrow.

I'll be doing alot of sanding, so that mold will come off, if thats what it is.

for now its all paper and pencil design sketches. Google sketch up requires to much finesse and coming from a design background, traditional methods always worked better for me than high tech alternatives.

Looks like mold from here too. I wouldn't attempt to sand it off 'couse ya risk spreading the spores. If I were gonna use that cab, I would hit it with a strong bleach/water solution to kill the mold, then hit it with 2 coats of kilz primer to seal the wood.

Once you light that thing up (add heat) then put plants in it (adding water), your mold issues will begin in earnest.

But, as mentioned above, I don't think I would use that thing as it is too damn short to really do much with. Cutting it in half and doubling it up would give ya some head room, but then attemping to put a 4' light fixture into a 3 and a half foot cabnet presents a new set of challanges. Add in the existing mold issues, and it looks more and more like firewood.

2x3x8's are $2 a piece and cheap panneling is $13 for a 4x8 sheet(and doubles up as "white board" so ya can make notes on the outside).

Thanks for the input Aquagrower :)

I'm going to clean it and bleach was the plan with steel-wool. scrub the nasty right off. Wasn't going to seal the wood, but paint the insides and then panda film line it, after of course drying and fuming off. Is that good enough, or better to seal the wood and forget paint all together, or its the same thing?

I took off the top supports/anchoring beams for the hanging cabinet.

The bottom, back and sides are particle board. Not worried about it.

Picked up a 8' x 4'+ plywood board to cut up.

Instead of cutting up the cabinet I will be building up.

I'm going to add a foot up for a total of 30" tall.

Building a ventilation system with passive intake on the top right side in the male cab and a light proof/breathable wall in between the vegcab/male pollen cab - still figuring the inside wall out.

Will use a booster fan I have as the exhaust power source. will be on the far left in the veg cab.

Might have separate computer size fans for the CFL's in the male pollen cab, not worried about the veg cab lights.

Going to cut up the wood I got and clean the cabinet.

Then im going to get the light system figured out. Once I got electrical and ventilation figured out I will get the breathable wall designed/made.

After that is sorted ill start building up the walls and mounting things into place as well as finishing the woodwork.

Lots of work ahead and my back is already over it :)

Fuck That Cabinet

92$ 60-Inch x 48-Inch x 24-Inch Mylar Reflective Hydroponic Grow Tent? YES PLEASE.

As much as I want to do the work for the cabinet. Financially/long term its not the best idea as my veg cab.

I might flip it to be standing tall instead of wide, and just cut it down to like 4 ft and make it into a male pollen cab since I REALLY want one of those lol, but im not dropping another benjamin for something I don't really need. Plus the roomies want to use it as shelving in the garage which is a dope ass idea if you ask me.

Oh idk anymore, the amount of options for everything is driving me nuts. Whatchya'll think?

The grow tent. Grow your boys in there and toss a wench in every once in a while to get knocked up.

I like the cab in original form for a seedling/clone cab.

well I was aiming for a perpetual the male part a bonus. Ima get the tent for vegging/cloning.

The male cab will have to wait and the cabinet itself will stay in the garage.

Right now I have to focus on the house anyways and can't even start the closet because I have one more visit to expect.

Cabinet is officially being used as garage storage.

Thread finished.

Thanks for your time and ideas everyone, but I think if I will invest muscle and money into a wooden box, i'll be making it from scratch instead of building onto something.

Plus the tents being so cheap these days its such a simple easy solution opposed to going out of your way to light seal some stupid doors and shit like that.

I wanted to do this but the closet gets priority and I don't even have shit vegging so I can't start a perpetual anyways.
