Verite just said exactly what I was thinking. Ikea sucks, and not everyone has one, and plus you'd run into a real shi*ty spot when they STOP making that exact model!!! Their inventory changes like every few months, and it all comes from different suppliers, so, theres no chance in solidifying a correct dimension plan. THOUGH, I appreciate your candor, and willingness to share your idea! Dont let anyone discourage you!
great idea but not viable in the US today. even though you aren't selling illegal items, you are selling items to be used for an illegal activity. will get you some unwanted scrutiny i would imagine. as long as you are not growing while running the business, you would be fine.
One of the most difficult things about building your grow box is attaining a 'lightproof' door seal, I hope some of this info is useful to you MacGuyver types out there.......
I've refurbished a few commercial refrigeration units in my day & one of the things I always replace are broken/cracked door gaskets. This is simple to do to get the right seal.
If you've built your box already and have cut the door to the precise (nice & neat, edge to edge) size of the opening of the box this would be the next few steps in making it lightproof. Measure the OUTSIDE dimensions of the door, let's just say it measures out to 24" X 60" you'll need to order a custom 'Molded Magnetic Gasket' from a link like I've supplied below.
I'm not building a grow box right now so you'll have to use your imagination w/o a step by step picture tutoral here. I'll explain as best I can & then PM me if you have any Qs & would like further assistance.
The first pic shows 3 gaskets, the top two ARE NOT what you'll use because as you might notice they are 'push in place' (light grey lines) gaskets meant to seat in a track already cut into the reefer units door. The bottom gasket (black arrow) shows you a profile of the gasket for this type of project. The 2nd picture shows a section of the real gasket itself.
As you can see from the profile/sideview of the correct gasket that it has an open channel, then a small compression area, then the heavier magnetic seal located at the top of the sideview. The open channel is what makes this simple to use.
Once you have measured the door (leave the door unmounted until everything is in place) & ordered the correct size gasket you'll need to cut a piece of 'Thrifty White Tile Board' (TWTB & only 1/8th inch thick) from Home Depot to the same size as your door, yes there is room in the channel of the gasket. BTW the TWTB is white & waterproof on one side & somewhat like paneling on the backside, it is also the stuff you buy to make those dry eraser boards. Once you have your TWTB cut to the proper dimension (Home Depot will cut it to your exact dimensions) ease the gasket over it being careful not to tear it, trim the board just a tad if needed. You should wind up with a tight fit when done with the gasket firmly mounted around the board. Then just screw the TWTB to the door being careful to keep everything square. Instead of the TWTB you can buy white 'glassboard' from Home Depot but it is about $30 per 4'X8' sheet, it is superior by far.
You'll then need to mount some 'L' shaped steel around the box itself so the magnetic seal has a place to sit. Screw the 'L' channel steel into the inside box portion NOT the door side or your screws will stop the seal from being lightproof. Make sure to fill in any open seams on the steel with any kind of putty, again to assure it is lightproof.
Once the steel is mounted on the box & the gasket is mounted on the board & door you can set the door in place. Do this by lying the cabinet on its back and setting the door on top. Buy the appropriate type of hinge, then w/o pressing the door down (let the gasket hold its shape) screw the hinges in place. Done correctly (it's not that tough to do) your grow box will have a tight assed seal just like your fridge does.
