Step right up sir, we have the finest elixer in the land

Step right up sir, we have the finest elixer in the land

If you read on you will see it just uses the non-switchable 400w HPS ballast with a conversion bulb(S51 is a standard 400w HPS ballast). "This is a top of the line, high output, specialty Metal Halide Conversion bulb. This is a specialty bulb made to operate specifically with the 400 watt High Pressure Sodium ballast (S51 type) that comes with this grow light system."
Another thing, reflection is not the only thing you wan't out of a reflector hood, distribution is even more important(ie the dimples) or you can get very hot spots, (mirror-like, good for your cars headlight bad for growroom) "highly reflective polished aluminum reflector. The highly polished aluminum reflector has a mirror-like finish rated at 95% reflectivity for MAXIMUM LIGHT OUTPUT. This super reflective surface provides more raw light output than dimpled reflectors and is far superior in reflective qualities than cheap white painted reflectors which discolor over time.
This statement depends on the spectral distribution and the light the plant can use; PAR, "Remember - HIGHER LUMEN OUTPUT equates into MORE PLANT GROWTH and HIGHER TOTAL YIELDS."
Mine is 55,000 lumens(Eye Hortilux 400w Super HPS Enhanced) "This is not your ordinary 400 watt High Pressure Sodium bulb. This is a specialty is head and shoulders above all other 400w HPS bulbs on the market today.
53,000 lumens !!! 8% more light than standard HPS bulbs."

It's just a basic super hps, which is just a few dollars more than a standard HPS. I'm not trying to knock this set up, I just want you to see how advertising can make something seem better than it is. Probably not too bad a price, but that is relative to what your willing to live with. Generally you get what you pay for. I believe that the reflector technology is the key to a good hood. Other than that it's just a light socket. That's what makes PL Lighting top-notch. Ballast is basically a transformer, capacitor and starter. As long as they are quality components inside, you're good. Cheap or loosely mounted x-formers will drive you batty, hummin and buzzin. Lastly what are your grow room needs? If it is a tight space, a cool hood and exhaust fan is the way to go. If you are in an open room, you might be ok.
Hope I helped a little on your decision making Kreat.
P.S. Nope, never heard of um. Here is a link to get an idea of what I'm talking about, PL is award winning. PL Lighting System at Alt garden

Would the parabolic be best reflector?

Thank you very much, I think this will help in my decision. My grow space will be changing from time to time as i have to travel from home and back to my school throughout the different seasons. In my apartment at school I do it in my closet which i can leave open or close, it doesn't make a difference, i ushally have it closed for venting reasons as i've modified the closet. And at home i work in a conseal box with vents and what not. I'm trying to find a good unti that I can use as a conversion so I dont have to carry to many items back and forth with me.

May I ask, what makes the PL systems so good? Thanks, just trying to take every step to do this properly.

Oh Yeah!!

Oh Yeah!!

Kreat GAVITA,Gavita,Gavita sounds good also for your situation as far as transporting it place to place its small doesn't have a reflector so it fits in smaller spaces burns the same as a horizontal it won the newest stash awards heres the link get ready to READ-lol hope I helped on your decision making process here is the newest stash awards results this lamp http://www.hightimes.com/ht/grow/content.php?bid=107&aid=3 & here's a link to the lamp itself http://www.altgarden.com/site/lightsystems/gavita/gavita.html  Later Bigmone357

Wouldnt it be better yo have a reflected unit then one that doesn't have a reflector?

PL because they use replaceable interchangable very-close-to-the-light reflectors that have excellent distribution characteristics. Different reflectors for different shaped rooms or canopy depth needs. They use Venture lighting parts inside of their ballasts(Venture is a world leader in HID technology, especially MH) Mine is silent.
Gavita says you want that reflector close...well we went and put it right inside of the bulb instead. So it has a reflector, it's just inside the bulb.
Keep in mind to HPS can usually be mounted in any orientation, some MH's are Hor only, Vert only or Universal.
So the main idea here is to get even distribution of the light like a flood light, not concentrated like a spot light. Gavita can get away with the mirror-finish because the distance from the light source is so close the reflective angles can be easily dealt with.
Hope that clears things up a little. I here Gavita uses high quality parts as well.

I was talking with a few people today and to my surprise some of them said they ofton will only use HPS in their grow, doeos that sound normal? (Most of them were doing SoG techniques)

Well i've learned quite abit about different systems, I soon hope to choose which one id like to go for, I might have to wait till after my outdoor grow this way i have the money for it =p

I had the same questions about that Kreat. It was thought back in the day; MH for veg & HPS for bloom. Many have abandoned this, going with HPS only. Various reasons, stem elongation and such. Technology in lighting has come a long way and many like using enhanced spectrum HPS like Son T or Hortilux, etc. for the whole grow. I don't think it would be the best scenario to use a standard HPS for this situation, but thats just IMHO. I forsake my MH as well. I have a Eye Hortilux EN but Philips Son-T Plus is a hell of a good bulb from what I here. I know some are using 5+ yr old bulbs with good results. Don't forget Gavita...that lamp blazes out 58,000 lumens, not sure about it's spectrum.
Also with SOG they are probably using the HPS in their flower room. Fluoros or compact fluoros in the Veg and Propagation rooms. If I do it that way some day, I would use fluros as well, no heat issues.
