Breeding questions

Hello,

I have a project (my first) to cross two of my femele phenotype of TGA plushberry with two great sativa to create a nice hybrid.

This two pheno, plushberry 3 and 5, seems quiet interesting for breeding. Plushberry 3 have a very powerfull smell of pine and grapefruit and plushberry 5 smells red fruits.
This two pheno smell good, yield great (1 kg outdoor easy), dripping resin, form large and dense bud, and the effect (potent) is interesting to cross with sativa. The stone is very calming without make you sleep, you feel like you are in cotton. The high is trippy, psychedelic, and energetic for an indica dom strain (85% if we trust subcool).

I will grow some panama indoor and friends want to do malawi (i'll steal their male :) ). I want to make a first F1 of (Plusberry #3 x Panama) and (Plushberry #5 x Malawi), and in a second time reunify the 2 line (and work it if it's great, but for now one thing at a time :) )

So the question is what could you recommand me to select a good male of panama and malawi, what trait must i looking for ?

Thank you :tiphat:

First of all you need as many males you can grow to select from. the more you have the better your selection will be.
I'd select based on grow patterns, flower cluster density, smell and visible resin (if any).

you could also select multiple males and pollen chuck your mothers, then select from the offspring, but that would take an extra step in you process.

There are a few ways to go. You could do like the above poster mentioned in the second part of his post, select multiple possible males breed them to your outstanding Plushberry female(s) and track the traits of each resulting offspring with test grows. This way you will find out a. the traits the males pass on to the offspring, and b. what traits the plushberry pass on to the offspring (whatever traits seem most universal). This is a good method because you will learn the most about the males, and be able to decide what is truly 'Good' in each male, and possibly use him for other projects! This method takes time, that's the bad part of it.

Another way to go is to do the distillation/mishmash approach. Select multiple males and pollinate your female(s) and breed down the generations to narrow around the traits that you most want present in your seeds. Then you do the same for your plushberry malawi cross and then finally unite the two lines. I think this method will be less trial and error but more prone to stoppage (like a Whoops! Passed on some really bad traits in step 3 or 4 of breeding, have to start all over again). Also, having knowledge of detailed breeding programs is helpful.

There are more than one way to skin this cat. I've been reading 'Methods of Plant Breeding' by Immes and Hayes, its in the public domain (free on the internet) and that goes over the science of these breeding programs, amongst other things. Probably less boring and more relevant and up to date stuff out there... but it's free and it covers the basics well.

If you just wana pollen chuck that's cool, but think you could actually have some cool seeds in a stable line that you can keep around for many years if you do it right.

I try not to post when I'm super stoned, but some rules are meant for breaking. As for finding the traits to look for, just grow um and smoke some females. I think things will become clear then:biggrin::blowbubbles:

Welcome xinox,

Panama, Malawi, Nepal Jam, Bangi Haze, Purple Haze Thai .. they are all great inbred sativas to breed with indicas. I'd recommend you to explore the lines and select desired females, i usually have had better results pollinating sativas with indica males but it also depends on the dominant/recessive traits of the lines you are crossing, and not only the sex. Anyway, Panama is an amazing sativa to choose males for crosses.

The male selection also depends on the goal of the concrete project, if you want to add lot of genetic diversity then use different good males. If you are looking to work towards one concrete expression (like for example purple color) then consider just to select the males from that particular pheno.

Let us know if you have more doubts in the future. We may can help with new ideas during the selection process. Best wishes!
