Breeding for potency

I'm a super newbie and breeding really interests me. There's just one thing I really don't understand though.

My question is, how do you breed plants for their potency/taste when inbreeding a strain. Size and vigor or what not are apparent, you'd just put together the most impressive male(s) and female(s) or simply weed out runts. With potency though you would actually have to cut and smoke your product in which case you don't have a plant left to pollenate. If you went ahead and pollenated it from your male or males of choice then you would not be able to get a good idea of the high because of the seed factor.

I know it's possible.. I just don't understand.

You would need to make clones of your males and your females so that you could smoke the product from the parents and then breed with the clones after you find the traits that you are looking for.

I knew there must be a straightforward way to do it but i couldn't figure it out.

This is clearly something beyond what you'd be looking to try in the near future, but Reeferman has mentioned making hash oil from males to select potent examples for breeding. Clearly that still involves the taking of clones... once you get a really potent male you might consider keeping male cuttings of it for future use.
