Breaking Bad

I love this show! I thought the premiere was solid, although the whole witch dr. thing and crawling on the ground was kinda weird. For all the ppl saying they show the worst possible outcome, I mean its a show about cooking meth to make as much money before you die, then he doesn't die. So who knows...

I think it gave them a Terminator twins sort of appeal. I have a feeling when they finally say something it will be scholarly. Like well educated hitmen.

i got so tired of their "coolness" that i hope they don't say anything, ever lol :joint:

i hope they just flash walt's pic around in random churches and stuff, and exchange ridiculously cool glances at each other :joint:

That may be true but why do these shows always have to show the worst possible outcomes? While I do think they're entertaining I also get the feeling they're trying to teach "This is what happens when you get involved in the underground drug trade" when no, very few get shot at or attacked by mexicans or whatever. I guess it just irritates me that they always go the worst possible route. I mean, even the thing with Skyler totally kirking out on Walt about the drugs. She was going to divorce him for selling pot to raise money for the family in case he died!
People that are manufacturing/dealing mass quantities of methamphetamine to Hispanic gangs are likely to end up dead or in jail. I don't see what is so out of the ordinary about this scenario. What do you want? 1) Its a television show they have to find ways to entertain, 2) Walt is not a drug dealer he is a chemist who's partner is a junkie they deal to hispanic gangs/drug dealers along the boader, and on top of that they really don't know what the fuck it is there doing. I would say by all estimates in the real world they would both be dead or in jail by now, and if I were a betting man I'd say a guy like Tuco would have killed them a long time ago.

Secondly, Skyler freaking out in not that uncommon either. She is a female and she only sees methamphetamine as illegal no matter what reasons he is doing it for. Not only that but she is probably freaking out by the fact her brother in law works for the DEA. Do you really think she would be on board with this? Get real. What you want is the perfect family that happens to cook meth to support themselves. Ehhh, hate to break it to you, but most of the people cooking meth aren't living the perfect suburban life.

Im talking about a larger scale than just Breaking Bad. Same thing is going on with Weeds too. Then there's the thread about the new Ed Norton movie about a grower that ends up killing a bunch of people, etc. As if every time someone gets involved in the underground economy the end result is death and destruction. It's not! But I did admit that the shows would probably get boring if they just showed "real life". Hard to make a show with staying power when the highlight of the day is a ph adjustment...

Reread my comment about Skyler. She was handing Walt the divorce papers when she thought it was WEED he was selling. You watched the show right?

dude you still realize that its a fuckin tv show and its called social commentary; you can't expect a tv show to set an example for how people should live, it just presents what it wants and lets you make your conclusions about it

and i havent watched weeds since like the 4th season, but that show is fuckin lame anyways and was pretty retarded from the get go. breaking bad on the other hand imo is a lot deeper. to compare them is ridiculous lol.

but there are people out there who hate weed, just cause, for no reason at all. really is it that unreasonable to think that Skyler would want a divorce after all that happened? 100,000$ is quite a bit of bud, and on top of all the shit Walt pulled on his family, thats a totally reasonable response. and yea, DEA step brother is just the icing on the cake for that situation.
i was more than happy when they showed Walt tokin up and then say 'I think I actually liked it' lol! thats more than enough positive cannabis use on tv for me, but then again i dont watch that much tv so i dont know how much negative shit there is out there.
and look at Skylers sister, the klepto, and Hank is not without his vices or faults as a person even though he is the man upholding the law. IMO its great commentary right now and says a lot of things other places wont go overall.

and yea, it wouldnt be as exciting if they werent risking their lives, its dramatic after all not a comedy.

Weed is still illegal and her brother-in-law is still a DEA agent so my point still stands. To citizens like her drugs are drugs. There is little difference between marijuana and methamphetamine. She over reacted when she thought he was smoking marijuana how do you think she was going to act when she thought he was dealing it? To perfect law abiding police fearing citizens like herself it doesn't matter what Walt is selling drugs for to her drugs are wrong.

As if every time someone gets involved in the underground economy the end result is death and destruction.
I don't know if you have ever been involved with crime outside of marijuana, but a lot of the time it doesn't end well. A lot of the time people end up in prison or dead. That is just how it goes. I would say the show that's done the best job realistically showing the drug trade is The Wire and a lot of people were killed on that show, but I guess that's what happens when your dealing heroin in Baltimore, just like that's what happens when you get involved in meth, crack, gambling, or anything other criminal act. Its usually not a rosy outcome.

Weeds was a stupid show from the get go and never made marijuana growers/smokers look good.

The Wire is realistic all the way having spent half my life there, have two cousins in jail now there for attempted murder, and another cousin 6 feet under for being a drug kingpin selling "sweet dreams" (Had 6 cars, a lot of money, and didn't get him anywhere but a casket and a son left behind). For hard drugs this is an accurate portrayal, if it was really accurate Walt and Jessie would already be dead since they really have no idea how to run a proper business in this world. Probably by hispanics who would have cut their heads off.

Fair point, but how fun would it be watching a show about a couple guys that grow weed and spend their free time playing PS3 and walking their dogs. It would get boring after the first episode. :)

Oh ok I get it. Let's just dumb the subject down to the lowest common denominator, accept the completely negative stereotypes it conveys to uneducated viewers, and call it a day, then later complain when weed continues to be demonized in the media and by lawmakers and then we can ask incredulously, "Why don't people get it?!" After all, when you like the show anything goes, right?

That makes a lot of sense to me!

Ive always enjoyed Breaking Bad but I can't help but wonder how these types of shows influence the uneducated viewer. You just said yourself that meth and pot are the same to the uneducated. That scares the shit out of me! Now I know why every day Im looking at 5 years in jail for growing a plant.

I would watch it too! Maybe medical growers in Cali or something? Somewhere "legal" at least. It would show the uneducated that pot isn't a never-ending story of shootouts, divorces, etc. It's about time the POSITIVE side of the underground economy was put on display.
