Basically I just think about stress level..... Everything takes time to heal, make sure something is not in the healing process when you trim vegetation, or roots.
I make sure they are nice, and healthy green (nutrients are fine).
I make sure they have a matching amount of vegetation for its rootmass.
A tiny plant like the one in my picture isnt going to require a whole soda bottle (cut in half) worth of roots. So once I see it healed from the cuts, I will make the root mass match its vegetation amount...
You could use a party cup, and once the plant is big enough/roots big enough to pull up the dirt out of the cup by pulling on the plant stem. Then you could trim the roots down, and the leaves down to a amount that matches the amount of roots.
