Blynx's 1 sqft CFL cab & other CFL micro cabs

Can anyone chime in on weather a pc fan is more efficient at pushing or pulling air to vent a cab. I've ordered a whisper for my flower cabinet bit my mother cab will have dual 120mm one in and one out. Thanks in advance

Finally found some time to get the final weight of the last round in the LED cab.

This thread inspired me and thanks to Blynx and Terpene I put together my first grow box. I'll be posting shortly with pictures on a new thread.

I'm pretty sure that this cab is closer to 1.5 sq/ft but still a fantastic yeild none the less.

The LED cab is 1.75 sq ft.

The 75g yield equates to 42g/sqft.

You should be able to get 3/4s of an ounce from .7 sq ft, if not more.

Blynx mate! Your wiring is so clean. I'm planning a similar growbox. Can you share some pointers on wiring those lights?

Hi Blynx et al - has couple of questions for Blynx and one for the general audience if no-one minds.

Blynx - is there any particular strain that you've;
* noticed has produced particularly potent smoke under your LED's? Or do all the strains respond similarly in terms of reaching their potential? Know that you've said that overall you can't tell the difference between flower grown under CFL and LED )apart from getting more of it under LED!) but just wondered if you'd found one that seemed to like these conditions more than others.
*found particularly easy to grow in a micro set-up. Seems like none of them cause you any difficulties but maybe you're making informed choices before you start on length of flowering time, stretch, etc. Would be great to hear you recommendations.

Everyone - has anyone tried using T8 LEDs? They are a little pricey but put out a lot of lumens - 154 - 160 lumens per watt according to the specs (https://www.any-lamp.co.uk/philips-ledtube-hf-uo-24w-865-150cm-master-daylight-replaces-58w) Also, wondered if anyone knew if it would be possible to take the covers off these and expose the LEDs as Blynx has done with his bulbs. Can only find two threads on here with little or no info - maybe that should tell me something about their practicality?

I have just put one in my reveg compartment:

9w 4000k, plastic removed.
Not sure this is enough (have a second one) but I guess it will be sufficient for the revegging.

Hey man, I am just working my way through the thread but thought i;d see what your up to recently before I go back to start. Insane skills brother.

In this picture have you actually replanted on an angle to help with LST?

I haven't found any strains that run better under LED or HID or CFL. They all produce outstanding bud if grown correctly with good strains.

When growing micro, I do prefer more branchy strains that produce buds with little fan leaves. This allows me to pack more buds into an area because I can almost tie the plant into knots to either make a nice canopy or fill in an area.

I'm not a fan of leafy strains especially in micro, I want resin crusted buds comprised of mostly calyxes. Leafy bud is more inclined to make my throat itch after smoking it.

Haven't run T8s. I've only seen the LED version at Costco in 4ft lengths. Do they have smaller lengths of them now at the retail stores?

Yes I have put plants in at an angle in my micro grows. It helps spread the growth out and then up, instead of going straight up and leaving a lot of open space in the cab. It really depends on how large/tall the plant is that I'm putting in the cab.

Sorry missed your previous post asking about the wiring.
Your wiring is nice and neat, those bars will work great!
When do you think your cab will be ready?

My cab is almost ready. I'm tackling some light leaks and I want to make a quiet box for my fan.
As for it being put into action... we'll see about that. My place gets really cold in winter. No insulation, no heating and you can see your breath in the morning..... not sure the girls would like that.
But then again we had 20+ degrees in February so I might start around then if temperatures allow it or if I move by then

Cheers:tiphat:

Meanwhile you might want to grow some autoflowers, that way you can use 20/4 or 24/0 light period, which will keep the plants warm in low ambient temperatures. That's what I plan todo do in winter.

Thanks for the replies Blynx - yes, Phillips make the T8s in several lengths though, as far as I can see the UO (ultra output) types with CoB type lumens per watt only come in 4 or 5 foot sizes. The cheaper HO (high output) type, claiming 125 lumens per watt, start at 2ft. Like your early bulb measurements though, that figure may be increased by removal of the semi-translucent tube which we now know can be done thanks to Chevy cHaze :)) cheers!)

Some of the family will operate from both existing ballasts and mains electricity so may make a good option for anyone using T8s when it comes time to replace them. Though it may work out cheaper to buy Bridgelux EB strips like these;

https://www.digikey.co.uk/products/en/optoelectronics/led-lighting-cobs-engines-modules/111?k=bridgelux%20EB

Depends on driver choice I guess, though they don't need a heat sink, a major expense and hassle when dealing with CoBs, from what I've read on here. They do, however, come in sizes starting at just less than a foot and offer 150+ lumens per watt driven at the test current. The smallest ones putting out 1230 lumens total. Perhaps if under-driven the efficiency may increase but would leave you needing more strips. Swings and roundabouts.

LED bulbs do seem to be more expensive here than there with you so may be worth considering for that reason.

Not sure how many you'd have to pack into your box to get light equivalent to what you have now - nor if you can beat the sheer, wonderful simplicity of it!

Of course, even the smallest Phillips tube would be too long for your micro.
