Blocking windows.

What method do you use for blocking light in windows?
I was thinking black plastic but unfortunately the two local places that I thought would have a roll for sale only have clear plastic.
I really wanted to get a new room going this weekend but now I am forced to drive 3 hours each way for a roll of black plastic if that is what I need to use.
I was thinking perhaps tar paper would work and that is available locally.
I cant paint the windows.
Thoughts or advice?

no home depot? or lowes? they have rolls of black 3 mil poly...tar paper would work but not to flexible... any hardware store should have black poly though... buy some construction grade trash bags n slice them open n use those.. lots of options. i would figure something else out before i drove 3 hours
good luck

man, if you are having a hard time figuring this out, you need to step back and rethink your whole plan, bro.

Make sure you have blinds or something showing to the outside world so that you don't look all sketchy. That's the kind of thing that they tell your neighbors to look out for if they suspect you are growing weed, blacked out windows. I would use contractor grade garbage bags. Double 'em up for extra safety.

Personally, I would start with hanging a mini blind, then make a box out of plywood with a cheap florescent light hooked to a timer. That way, it looks like the room that you are growing in is being lived in, and not anything suspicious.

Put up some room darkening blinds or curtains and a few layers of poly behind it. 3-4 layers of 6 mil clear poly will prevent anyone from seeing in (or out) but will still allow some sunlight in.

However, as someone else mentioned, if this is something you are truly having difficulty figuring out...you may want to choose a different hobby.

A friend and I installed roll shutters. They have about a R12 rating, added security and black out the room pretty well also.

Thanks for the input . I found a new space that more than suits my present needs and it has no windows to worry about.
I live in a very remote area. There are no chain or department stores here. I am limited to a Mom and Pop general store and a privately owned hardware store owned and staffed by nosy bastards, so I avoid them. I literally have to travel 3 hours one way to get the simplest things that others take for granted . We have already done our monthly run and I wanted to do this project this weekend so I was looking for input from others as to what they use that would allow me to use what is available here.
And Dusto2K3, thanks for nothin' but my game is solid and has been for a number of decades. Rethinking my plan is exactly what I am doing. If I ever need sarcasm or a lack of useful input here I know who to ask.
Being an asshole doesnt improve your "manly essence" as stated in your avatar. It just makes you... an asshole.

k.i.s.s. = paint the clear plastic; BLACK and tuck tape the edges.

i completely box in my windows; 2x4 and plywood and leave the curtains up and shut. then panda poly = black/white. go outside and check for light leaks in the dark.

Blocking light needs to be done well IMO. First a blind for appearances sake. Then plywood, drywall, or even foam board.
