Hey nycd.. Here's the answer on how I grow in the small pots..

I use a combination of Sunshine Mix #4, and 3 part GH or Advanced Nutes and optimize the pots I use.

When I do small SOGs I'll start the clones in 2.5-3" pots and veg them for a week or so (maybe 4 days of real veg) then put them into the 16oz-1liter pots and veg for several more days then flower. I also start out with smaller clones, due to my large mum list I keep my mums tiny and start with smaller than normal cuts.

I find it better to start 12-12 with a pot full of roots over something just transplanted before flower. But that's just with my grow style and medium/nutes and for most hybrids and indicas. THe sativas work well with zero veg into the final container because they have much more root growth and stretch after 12-12.

For 2 gallons and 8" shallow pots I start in 3-4" squares, and usualy sex the plants in those if from seed. Square pots are resistant rootbinding and root spinout which helps you go longer in the same pots. Then I go to 6" square for a week or 2 depending on the veg speed. Then finaly into the 8" deep or shallow round pots, or I use 8" squares, I then veg them for at least 3-4 days, but preferably 7-10 days, especialy if indica dom.

I also do the 1st part of veg under floros, which keeps the plants more compact. I like to do the last bit of veg in the final pots under HID tho, preferably MH.

So I'd say it's a combination of the medium, nutes, and optimizing pot size and transplants.

I have tried all sorts of pots sizes, veg regimes, and veg times, on all sorts of strains, and I've just sort of evolved to grow this way over time.

I hope that helps..

If you use transplant early enough with round pots you won't have a problem with spin out. But from my experience you also won't make use of all your medium.

There's a product called griffin's root spinout, Uncle Ben had a FAQ on it at OG, I'm sure you could fins it on one of the FAQ archives, but the one I bookmarked no longer works.

You spray this copper based product on the insides of your pots like spraypaint. When the roots reach the edge of the pot, the copper based spray terminates the root tip, making it branch out like topping a plant does. This makes the roots produce much more of the 'furry' looking feeder roots, and you properly fill the pot with root mass, rather than just around the bottoms or sides.

Have you ever noticed when breaking up rootballs after harvest how all the roots accumulated at the bottom and sides of the pots, and on the inside of the rootball the medium has almost no roots in it? That's a product of spin out, where the roots reach the side of the round pots and rather than bouncing back into the medium, or terminating, they start to wrap along and downwards along the outside curve, where there isn't nearly as much access to nutes and all that good junk.

The square pot's shape works naturaly to top the roots, or direct them back into the medium. The more vertical the walls are the better. It's realy quite noticeable when transplanting a plant in a square and round pot at the same time.

The 'spin out' product works better than the square pots (because some roots follow the slope downward), but it's hard to find, so I've settled on just the sqare pots. But as soon as I find soem of the spray I'll be trying it. Uncle Ben's results were quite impressive.

There's nothing round with round pots, they just work a little differently.

Blockhead has been one of my faves from the 1st time I smoked it, and has continued to be one.

Now, my BHs were freebies, and I've heard people mention that they may be 2nd rate? I'd have to disagree on that one..

I germed all 5, and despite some nute deficiency problems I still ended up with 4 females and 1 male.

I still have all females over 6 month later, I may cull one soon, but I'm still not 100% sure.

I hear people talking about different BH phenos, like BB and grape, but I'm not sure which category I'd class each pheno in. Any comments would be appreciated from the people who have identified certain phenos.

Most of the phenos have the similar fuely-grapefruit smell to them, altho 1 pheno has a more hashy smell, and another has much more GF smell. One has a sweeter smell, and has much more stretch than the other phenos. The I have one pheno with the typical fuel/gf smell but with longer petoiles, and good structure.

The 5 seeds were Big, Black, healthy, and all germed in 24 hrs. The plants were/are all pretty amazing IMHO, certainly not 2nd quality by any means or definition.

I'd love to hear other BH grower's takes on these phenos.. The 1st 2 plants are my 2 fave phenos, then the next is my next fave, and so on.

this is the hashier pheno, but still lots of gf/fuel in there.

This one has lots of gf smell, very tasty.

Then we have my next fave, kinda in between the top 2 phenos in smell.

Then we have the BBish one, but again, still has the GF and fuel int he background. This one has the lowest trichome production, but it's still a very respectable smoke.

Here is the male, the only male I got, which was the most amazing resin producign male I have seen, which a great smell on the GF side, and insanely dense male flowers.

I'd love any and all comments from other BH growers on phenotype.

here´s what im thinking bc

all pheno´s that have a greener bud colo would fit into the " mixed " category of phenotypes were simply all parents used represented in a nice blend .. the same with those ~ 60 days needing ones ...

the pix of the second Bh i would consider to be a Blueberry (2000er ) phenotype ...

the others have to be sweettooth phenotypes , or you got a pack were swt wasnt introduced at this time the freebee´s were made ...

IMHO yukons Bh ismuch lesser swt influenced than my batch ...

have fun
chat ya later bc

I grabbed this from beancounter from another BH post...it sounds quite relevant here:
lol, it's finaly gaining the notariety it deserves I guess

Here's something I picked up from another site, on how to find a BH pheno closest to the mother.. I'm not sure exactly what it means.

"One of the parents of Blockhead is indeed P 19.It came from a guy called Seuss in Oregon.Suess once told me when looking for the best P 19 pheno to look for the plant with the 2 smallest leafs near the leaf stem to point upward. He claims this trait was only found in the best P 19 like phenos.Good luck.I would like to find something simlar to P 19 again.Excellent smoke.I believe this is also a strain used frequently by Soma,But he calls it Big Korean Skunk.Peace GS"

^^^^thanks beancounter...I'm off to find me some Big Korean Skunk ...I hope soma has my number!

does that last bit of info mean that "suess" from oregon is AKA "1krazyanqui" (sp?)?
...the one who provided "p19" (african sativa)...and did not even recommend letting it out due to its intensity?

man.. wishing that i had jumped at a pack of blockhead about now

www.growshopalien.com they have Blockhead
they also have the SOL "adventure mix"

I might get a few paks of those (a-mix) ...even though it may be as long as a year or so before I can get any goin' since I have quite a few projects in the works right now.

and I would work the hell out of the "Adventure Mix" ...there are def hundreds of pheno possibilities in there.

I have a bunch of blockheads clones waiting to root. I got a bunch of beans from syb, ended up with 1 girl and 5 boys. I have some Sweet Tooth 1.1 at the 4th node too.
I am thinking of popping the Venomberry x Blockhead or th SWT #3 x Blockhead.

You guys are gonna hate me for this but I have to say I'm a bit disapointed with the bh. Its very strong (def in the 3 strongest I've ever had) flavorful and a top yielder but the buzz is edgey and sedative at the same time. It just makes me uncomfortable. I got 2 single cola st phenos 1 tall dark bb pheno and two others that are hard to place. One of the unidentified phenos is a much less sweet/funky odor than the others the top of the cola also points in several different directions.

hej zamalito my friend ;) , no bad feelings here , just go back 1 page and look on the nugget nepthaze posted (its mine , the bb leaning one , went for 70 or 75 days and got no soaring part of the high just a strong relaxing body stone which is not real couchlock , just in between , hehe )

the Bh posted on this page is the same pheno just harvested at 60 days , the soaring uphigh is here as well as a nice relaxed body which make´s the perfekt daytime indica for me ... generally it reveals Bh´s sativa heritage ...

have fun
