"First take the 1&1/4" hole saw bit with starter bit,To make the holes for the 3/4" ebb n flow fittings."

Would I still use a 1 1/4" hole saw if I was going to use 1 inch ebb n flow fittings?

Thanks in advance fellas!

Depends. The 1" barbed fitting is on the outside of the bucket and doesn't go through the hole in the side of the bucket. The threaded end that has the seal on it is the one going into the bucket. I think those are all usually the same size, so yea, either measure, or start with the 1&1/4", and if thats too small, increase your hole by another 1/4" inch or so.

That's a great, well thought out tutorial! I was thinking of running a DWC system, but a recirculating DWC looks way cooler and easier to maintain! Honestly, props !

Friend is doing a "bastardized" version of this. He has a resivoir and 4 pots. The pits are only hooked up to the resivoir at the bottom. Inside the resvoir he has a pump that recirculates the nutrient solution within the resivoir. The plants are in net pots that are quite a by larger than the ones pictured in the begining of this thread. They are grown in hydraton and fed with a ring that uses water from th pot. It seems Fairly easy to convert it to this system. Is it worth it? Will it Improve his grow? He doesn't currently use a water chiller. Should he be using one with this system?

Very excited about all this

Very excited about all this

This will be my 1st post. I have read all of the sticky from blazeoneup. Just one question, By the end of the sticky there are two ways of doing this. Whats better, the return lines on top or bottom? Thanks so much.

thanks to everyone for all the 411 as knowledge is priceless - all this is very interesting - I'm an organic soil grower :plant grow: but am a lil bored & also tired of hauling bags & bags of soil & mixing them with ammendments so ive been following this for awhile plus many other builds taken from all this info -- right now I'm im between this or a rockwool minicube drip DG style seen here: http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=137873&page=54 - Ive personally seen this type of drip setup (but it was drip to waste) give awesome yields (at-least 8oz per 5g bucket with 1 mnth veg-) & + its a bit simpler but the rockwool cubes are mad expensive also - idk what to set up for myself tho' since ppl seem to praise the dwc so much & claim amazing results with it I'm almost leaning more towards the dwc -- maybe u guys can sway me one way or the other - I have to say the only problem I have about this rdwc system is the need for an expensive ass chiller & all the airstones but to be completely honest the MAIN thing that has KEPT me from building one of these systems is some CONFUSION from other posts ive heard from ppl who have already run this such as:

"some advice from someone whom has already tried this system.

his setup is nice but has one issue you need to be aware of. the drain hoses back to the reservoir are piggybacked which restricts nute flow back to the rez. the buckets furthest away from the reservoir will keep a much higher level of nutes in the bucket then the fronts will. its ok at 1st. about 4-5 weeks into flower when the roots are filling up the grow buckets and begin growing in and around your drain line, you will most likely experience an overflow flood out of the back buckets. been there done that.
to fix and keep the same level of nutes in all buckets, you will need to make some design changes.

1) instead of piggybacking the return lines. run a line from each bucket back to the rez.
or
2) use a very large return line from example - 1.5" - 2" pvc pipe instead of hose that can handle more water volume.

you would think that reducing the feed lines flow to the buckets would fix the issue but the roots growing into and around the return line openings really causes problems late in the grow.
just some advice from personal experience."

CAN ANYONE CLARIFY THIS PLZ???? Let me know what you guys think or better yet know about all this as facts would honestly be more helpful than personal opinions- any & all info would be greatly appreciated as many minds put together are better than 1 - unity is strength - thanks in advance to all the positive and helpful ppl making this world a better place to live in - keep it righteous at all times-- BLESSINGS & LOVE to 1 & ALL

I think people have the res and the controller confused. The controller and the buckets have the same level but the res needs to have enough to replace the whole system.

Does any one have a good source for the 3/4 and 1/2 inch shut off valves? I cant seem to find them locally unless I want the metal ones.

Thanks

JAH WORKS:

Say, for example, that you have six buckets draining back via one line to a controller bucket. Nute-rich solution gets pumped from the controller through the feeder hose into those six buckets virtually simultaneously.

But the solution that leaves those buckets and returns to the controller is not being pumped. Gravity drains them. If anything (such as long, luxurious root strands) impedes or drastically reduces that simple gravitational flow, buckets can, and do, overflow.

And you have six buckets, in a line, draining into the same drain line. If that drain line is not wide enough to accommodate the flow from 6 buckets, then once again, the system can back up and buckets can overflow.

There is no magic formula for computing exactly how wide your drain line needs to be. If you only have one or two buckets, then you're safe with 1/2" feeder and return. From 3-6 buckets, you probably want at least a 3/4" return. And more than 6, you want to start looking at 1" PVC -- or wider. The wider the better: there's no downside to going with more capacity except for incrementally higher initial cost.

And remember: That is the MAIN drain line. The short lines that run from each bucket to that main drain can be 3/4", no problem.

Do you like the main drain on top so it fills then overflows into the drain or on bottom where it is fed by gravity back to the controller?

To anyone who is reading I haven't been on this thread for a while and I noticed that the plastic tee piece I mentioned is back up. I had a problem with this piece recently, the last ones I received do not fit 1/4" feed-line. Something is up so please DO NOT order them. I noticed they are completely different than the ones I have now so I am not sure what is going on. I will try to contact them I just have no time lately :( Sorry about all that everyone.
