hey blaze, nice to see things are looking great for you. The ladies all look very healthy and happy, my veggie garden took a bit of a turn as it's been about 43-45 C here this past week with the heat and humidity, but I think they'll be ok. This mix is great in the vegetable garden, I am going to be eating cucumbers until it snows

Blaze - FANTASTIC soil recipe!! Just swapped a few of my plants over to my own version of it and they seem to be rock'n roll'n.

Question: Has anyone found a good substitute for the Promix portion of this mix? I contacted their sales dept only to find they do not sell the stuff anywhere near me...so I need to find something that is just as easy but can replace it.

For this mix I went with Miracle Grow Organic and instead of the promix went with the Miracle Grow super moisture control soil. It was the closest thing I could find that matched the promix ingredients. The only downside is it has nutes already in it...so I cut the bloodmeal and bonemeal down to 1/2c thinking this might help balance it out.

That moisture control is a major no no. Anything that says it retains water for long periods of time and releases it is bad news. I would steer clear. If that moisture control soil is the same one that I am thinking of with the moisture crystals or whatever miracle grow calls them.

Klutter I stated previously you can substitute the pro mix with peat moss and vermiculite. I wouldnt have went with more miracle grow of any kind though honestly just personal opinion.

what's the approximate composition of ProMix in terms of % peatmoss, vermiculite, etc.

Im not certain exactly what the ratio would be but I will suggest, Mixing about 6 cups of vermiculite per cubic ft of peatmoss as well as 6 cups of perlite normal small perlite which would produce something simular to the pro mix.

I dont think the pro mix actually has any vermiculite in it but it does have some type of moisture retainer in it.

thanks blazeoneup, one more question if i may

the ratios you gave me, are they that of promix or what should be used in growing? if i'm not mistakened most people add additional perlite to promix when they use it

When I asked about the Pro-Mix for Containers at my local shop, they didn't have any, so they pulled the product catalog, and compared the 'regular' with 'for containers'. He said that it looked like the 'for Containers' just had polymer water crystals in it.

Take it for what it's worth :D
