Mriko, I'm really sorry to hear this. Even in the usa its actually rare you'll find a politician who will publicly say they prefer incarceration to treatment. Although I'm byt no means saying the punishments are fair or just. Technically, almost every state in the US has decriminalized, meaning that you will be let go and given a ticket if caught with cannabis.
Though there are obvious differences I've always felt the US and France are more alike than either cares to admit.
But it's not only Sarkozy's fault that France has succumbed to the American-like sensibility of consumption over culture, I saw many McMansions obviously designed by American suburban architectural firms back almost a decade ago when I was last in France.
You see mindless consumption is truly Jesus' gift to the American people and we just want to share that with the rest of the world--once you've found buyer's heaven, nothing on the outside matters, any logic at all is sufficient to explain away brutality genocide imperialism etc, the only language is the language of personal wealth and material, the only thing the people understand.
